Title: Help requested - meaning of 1662 phrase "ad Facultas Mag."
Post by: SiGr on Thursday 18 September 25 19:11 BST (UK)
Hi, all,

I just came across the following phrase referencing a 1662 document, "signed by 'Jo. Berkenhead ad Facultas Mag.'".

Would anybody have any idea what it means, please ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments/ideas.

Simon

Should probably be … ad faculta(te)s mag(ister) = 'Master of Faculties', an official of the Archbishop of Canterbury who could authorise dispensations for things that were normally prohibited.

Hi, Bookbox,

Thank you for that swift and helpful reply.

And the list of holders of the post in the Wikipedia article you included actually identifies the John Birkenhead as well.

Best wishes.
