DNA tests show that I am related to the father of Edward Johnston who was born Feb 1859 (other sources say 1858) in Illinois. Edward died 13 June 1924 in Buckley, Iroquois Co., Illinois, USA and was not married. Looking for his obituary for more clues about his father Thomas who was born in Ireland but not sure where. Thomas married Isabella Rachel Arter abt 1858, supposedly in Plainfield, Will Co., Illinois but no marriage record was found by the Will Co. Clerk's office.
I have Thomas' obituary on Dec 28, 1901 at his home 6 miles west of Clifton, Danforth Township, Iroquois Co., Illinois which was very brief and no death certificate was found by the Iroquois Genealogical Society or by the Co. Clerk.
Thanks for any help

Edward's brother Robert William aka Will Johnston died Oct 1, 1945 in Kankakee Township, Kankakee Co., Illinois. He was married to Charlotte Elizabeth aka Lottie Heideman on 13 Feb 1899. His marriage record says he was born in LaSalle Co. but other sources indicate Harvey, Cook Co., Illinois. Perhaps his obituary would help with information about his father Thomas J. who died Dec 28, 1901 in Clifton.

I am delighted to have this obituary and death certificate although there is no information about his parents on the death certificate. I wonder why since his wife Charlotte Johnston nee Heideman lived until 1966, not sure of exact date, probably in Gilman, Illinois, where she was living when Robert William Johnston died.
Perhaps the obit of Thomas' daughter Ellen Suhre Oct 16, 1932 in Trent, Taylor Co., Texas, USA might have more info about her father Thomas since he lived with Ellen for some time, when her surname was Mulligan, and she is mentioned in his will written in 1894. Thomas was living with Ellen and her husband William Austin Mulligan in 1900, I think Chicago, and Thomas only died in 1901. Perhaps Ellen will have Thomas' exact place of birth, if we are really lucky. Really, really lucky.

Ellen's death certificate is on ancestry.
Born January 1859 ! Find A Grave has 5 January 1865
Father Thomas J Johnston born Ireland
Mother unknown
-
Her obituary is there as well, unfortunately I don't have a sub for newspapers.com

Thank you amondg. I found her death certificate on Ancestry and the date of birth was 1865, which is what I had. Unfortunately, the place of birth for her father was just given as Ireland and her mother was unknown.
Perhaps someone will be able to find her obituary which may clarify some things such as Thomas' place of birth.

Sorry, I see that the death certificate for Ellen had her dob as 1859. Sorry for the confusion.
-
I also see her obituary on findagrave. Names her living relatives which I have figured out. Not gettting too far in regard to the birthplace of her father.

Ellen had a sister Elizabeth who married John Verhoeks in 1893 and she died Aug 1, 1935 in Illinois, either in Milksgrove Township, Iroquois County or in Herschel, Kankakee, Illinois. Can anyone find her obituary?
-
She is buried Pilot Center Cemetery, Herscher, Kankakee Illinois
Memorial ID 7411217
John is next to her 7411216, he died 1940
-
Thank you, amondg. I have now found her as Lizzie Johnston Verhoeks on findagrave. Now, if we were to find her death certificate or obituary, looking for the birth place of her father Thomas.

Edward Johnston had a brother James Johnston who was born Mar 6, 1878 in Douglas Township, Iroquois Co., Illinois and died 17 May 1949 in Guymon, Texas Co., Oklahoma due to a tornado. Is there an obituary or death certificate for James Johnston, which might have information about his father Thomas J. Johnston. thanks for any help.

Thank you Sandra. These articles are great but I couldn’t access the last one-says this clipping has been marked as not public. If it is your clipping, please sign in to view it. Which I can’t do.
Now to look for his death certificate.
