Mr. GODLEY declared to be William Thomas born 1822, from Lindfield, Sussex, England. In 1852 he married other side of the world. Declared both parents in England were dead: father Thomas GODLEY mother Lucy SKINNER. But no proof found.
An experienced researcher found out the closest:
Thomas GODLEY born to Thomas & Mary GODLEY in 1818.
Note: Maybe WT GODLEY forgot his actual birth year or took a few yrs off at marriage. Maybe baptized as Thomas but known as William Thomas to distinguish him from his father. His statement that parents were dead in 1852 (or long before), can explain he didn’t know exact details, like his mothers official name.
Couple Thomas GODLEY & Mary SKINNER married in Isfield 14 Sep 1812.
Thomas & Mary Godley children baptized in Lindfield:
Lucy 5 March 1815 / Thomas 3 May 1818 / Barnett 26 Nov 1820
1841 census a Thomas GODLEY is living in Lindfield with a family of 4 girls called Packham. Aged 1-20 at Upper or Littch (Little?) Plumerden Farm. Thomas is not there in 1851, some of the girls are.
Note: If this was him, it might explain Thomas was lodging in 1841 and left the country for a new life before 1851. Of course all speculative.
From sources via different continents, the following facts about WT GODLEY:
- He had a sister named Lucy GODLEY, married to John …. (unknown), they lived in Sussex.
- Annie LISTER a cousin from Sussex. Annie had a sister or daughter: Mary LISTER.
- William & Emma GATES from Brighton, Sussex, somehow related or very good friends.
- One of WT’s children died young, one of the baptismal names Barnet
About descendants WT GODLEY: some info is known, but came to a standstill.
Please help to find out more about WT GODLEY / T GODLEY and ancestors.
Maybe in connection via other names mentioned above.

Hi, a possibility although may not be him.
Findmypast has a record for a William T Godley aged 22 in 1841 from Lindfield, Sussex.
British Royal Navy and Royal Marines Service and Pension records 1709 - 1939.
Lists ships served on and rank up to 1857. May have served in Mauritius after that in a different capacity.
May be why he married abroad?

In 1851 Mary P Packham and Ann B Packham are living with John & Mary Godley in Lindfield - described as nieces
Mary Penfold Packham who married Thomas Sadler in 1861'
Father James Penfold occ Gamekeeper - witness Ann Booker Packham
Ann B Packham is Ann B Godley in 1871 - married to George Godley
The marriage has her as Ann Booker Packham - father James Booker. Georges father is Luke Godley.
ADDED
Mary Godley was born in West Hoathly as was Mary Penfold Packham so the niece connection could be on her side.

He served with the Surveyor General’s Department in Mauritius from 1862 to Aug 1876.
He appears to have been based with the Navy ( on his request ) at Mauritius from about 1849.
His first daughter was born in Mauritius about 1855.

From the first post
...William & Emma GATES from Brighton, Sussex, somehow related or very good friends...
Have had another look and wonder if this is the possible Gates connection, a Lucy Godley then Gates is mentioned in trees with different parents but I thought the census returns worth noting as I can't see many Lucy's around!
I couldn't find Lucy after 1851 because they seem to have changed their surname to Gates
Always Thomas b. Horsted Keynes and Lucy b. Lindfield
1851 as Agent/Agait
1861-1891 as Gates in Lindfield
Delfy from 1861

Ciphy, There has been information about Gates posted. So far, your lack of engagement with people on the forum, makes us wonder if we are wasting our time.
Good luck with your research.

Being new here, unexperienced on this forum and not English, encouragement is appreciated. Because of my limitation, difficult for me to verify if a search result is a correct match. Therefor I asked on the forum help with some extra names.
Sorry, I don't know yet about the status of relation of Elisha, John, Mary GODLEY in 1841 in Lindfield / County (rosie99). Hoped to find out that sister Lucy married to a John with maybe the surname GATES (willsy) (rosie99).
It makes sense that WT GODLEY joined the Navy / Marines, that must be correct. It explains why he left the UK (cath151) (willsy).
About the Packham girls, by now, I doubt direct connection with WT himself. Although they relate to some Godley family like John and Thomas GODLEY (rosie99).
Father of sister Lucy and WT himself is defenitely Thomas GODLEY.
I wonder if father Thomas married twice: to a Lucy SKINNER and to a Mary SKINNER. Or that his wife was named Lucy Mary or Mary Lucy.
Indeed Barnet I saw more often in connection with familyname Godley (Neale1961).
I am not involved in any tree publication about descendants (Neale1961).
My focus is on ancestors William Thomas GODLEY and his younger years in the UK.
Suggestions are welcome. If nobody can help further, I respect all the efforts sofar. And thankfull for the kind help received.

Packham/Peckham family, from census returns and Rosie99 mentioning the family are from West Hoathly
John Godly married Mary Peckham 25 Feb 1837 at West Hoathley.
