Hi,
Area: West Challow, Oxfordshire, (historically Berkshire).
Wondered if anyone could help me with this conundrum.
I am trying to research my Vokins family.
Mary Vokins, born in 1656, to Richard Vokins and Joan Bunce married Edward Lockey on 03/08/1684. Edward and Mary had a son, Joseph, born on 21/12/1686. Joseph married, had one son, (Hopefull Lockey), and died on 30/03/1738. In his Will Joseph mentions, (amongs others), a John Lawrence and a Sarah Lawrence, son and daughter of Adam Lawrence, (Joseph does not mention if or how he is related to John and Sarah). Joseph also goes on to mention Mary Lawrence, 'another daughter of the said Adam Lawrence'.
I think that the sister of Mary Vokins, named Sarah Vokins, (c1660-1741), married Adam Lawrence (1657-April 1743), on 14/04/1689. As far as I can see Sarah and Adam went on to have five sons; Isaac, Joseph, Adam, Oliver, and William. Oliver and William both died in childhood.
Son, Adam Lawrence, (12/01/1696-24/06/1751), married Mary Franklin on 27/02/1724 in Witney, West Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, England. In his Will (signed 20/04/1751) Adam mentions his 'eldest son, John, beloved wife, Mary, sons, Isaac and Joseph and daughters, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth'.
I thought that this Adam Lawrence was probably the father of the John, Mary and Sarah Lawrence, mentioned in the Will of Joseph Lockey, which was proved on 03/05/1738.
The only baptisms of children of Adam Lawrence and Mary Franklin that I can trace are Jonathan on 01/08/1739, ('Brought to church September 28th'), Hannah on 07/08/1741, and Sarah on 29/10/1745, aged one day. Daughter, Elizabeth died on 01/08/1786, aged 52, (so born about 1734). My problem is, if these are the correct people, why was daughter, Elizabeth not mentioned in the Will of Joseph Lockey when her three other siblings were and if Jonathan/John was not born until 1739 how IS he mentioned, (unless he was baptised several years after his birth)?? Did the daughter, Sarah mentioned in the Will in 1738, die young and was another Sarah later born in 1745?? Also it seems odd that the parents of Adam Lawrence junior were not mentioned as they would have been closer relations.
In addition John is recorded as the eldest son of Adam Lawrence and Mary Franklin but as they married in 1724 and went on to have sons John, Isaac and Joseph you would imagine that at least one son was born in the 1720s, (probably John as he is mentioned in the Will of Joseph Lockey).
I am beginning to think that I have the wrong people but just wondered if anyone could help me clarify this.
Sorry that this is all a bit jumbled but I didn't know how to explain it to try and make it any clearer!
Kind regards,
Coreen

Hi Coreen,
I can't find many entries for Vokins in East or West Challow. Where did you find Mary Vokins bapt. of 1656?
I have seen some "Vokins" baptisms in Sutton Courtenay, Berks going back to the 1662 time - but I think they are too far away.
Alan.

Hi,
Thanks for replies. Will definitely have a look at those Wills.
I am not 100% sure re baptism but thought she was possibly the Marey Hocins baptised 28/04/1656 in Charney Bassett, Berkshire. Father: Richard. Mother unnamed.
Kind regards,
Coreen

In his Will, Richard Vokins mentions his son-in-law Adam Lawrence and wife Sarah.

Thank you for that.
