Title: Emily Mary Spencer/Greenwell
Post by: mulberry-rose on Friday 12 September 25 10:43 BST (UK)
I’m trying to find out what happened to Emily Mary Spencer b. 1838 at Durham, daughter of Joseph Marley Spencer & Jane Greenwell, between 1851 and 1870.

In 1851 she lived at 5 Hudson’s Buildings, Durham with parents and siblings. There is no sign or her (and her family are missing too) in the 1861 census.

She then shows up years later having an illegitimate daughter; Rosa Emily Margaret Spencer born 9 March 1870 at 9 Crompton(?) Street, Paddington. Then in August 1870 she is going by “Emily Shott” living at Bedlington.

She is supposedly married to a man named Edward/Edwin Shott, a commercial traveller (in 1874, a drapers traveller). However he’s not on the 1871 census at Bedlington w/ Emily and daughter. Edward/Edwin sometimes appears with the middle name Arthur on children’s birth registrations.

Emily had three more children; Emma Flora (1872), Edwin Arthur (1874) and Emily Rosa (1877). She then married Arthur Richard Fry in 1880 and those remaining children took the name Fry.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

1861 Census for Bishopwearmouth ....

Find My Past transcription incorrectly shows the following ...

Joseph M Spereall age 54
Jane age 46
Elizabeth Ann ang 26
Emily I age 23
William D age 21
Jane age 18
Margaret age 13
Charles A age 0

However looking at the original entry, the surname is Spencer and Emily I is actually Emily M.

To be fair they have not been on here since any replies have been posted.  Maybe they are like me and do not get notifications when someone posts on their threads.

Wow excellent work, thank you!  ;D I don’t think it looks much like Spearell on the original!

My notifications have been a bit odd recently. I have emails but they’re not showing up so I have to check manually.

Thank you for these, Rosa was the one I started researching first so I have birth and burial info. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/265841958/rosa-emily_maggie-shott

Unfortunately the whereabouts of Edward/Edwin is a mystery.

His name isn’t very consistent, and then in one of the children’s births he appears as Edwin Arthur Shott instead. Sometimes as Stott too.

There was no marriage for him and Emily either.

Rosa Emily Margaret b. 9 March 1870, 9 Compton Street Paddington. Died 12 Aug 1871 Bedlington Colliery, informant Edward Shott

Emma Flora b. 26 September 1871 Sleekburn Colliery

Edwin Arthur b. 19 April 1874 32 Watson Terrace Newcastle. Father Edwin Arthur Shott (drapers traveller). Mother Emily informant.

Emily Rosa b. 30 April 1877 59 Frank Street Gateshead. Mother Emily informant.

I am very intrigued by that burial. Although Emily Rosa was born 1877 I suppose anything is possible  ;D

I wonder if the family lived in Morpeth for a bit. There’s advertisements from June 1870 for a Mrs Shott dressmaker, and Emily was a dressmaker in the 1871 census.
