Title: Finding an Aunt
Post by: Debs1962 on Thursday 11 September 25 21:50 BST (UK)
Hello all. I am hoping I can receive a big of help please. My access to another family finding group is playing up and causing me a headache. Could anyone be kind enough to find any information about a Patricia Coward.
I believe she was born in the 1930s in London and was evacuated during WW2. She came to live in Wolverhampton and I believe her maiden name may have been Patricia Hillier as she was adopted by the lady she lived with. She married my uncle Raymond George Smith in the late 1950s. In the 80s they moved to Barnstaple but the marriage ended.

Aunty Pat remarried and became Mrs Patricia Coward. I also believe she may have moved to Wales.

I would like to find out if she is still alive if possible.
I will be extremely grateful for any help you give. Thank you in advance.

Rootschat have a no living persons policy to protect peoples privacy so you need to remove her name from your post.  Unless you know that WGS has died you need to remove his name as well

Click on the Modify icon in the top right corner of your post to edit it

If any children were born to the marriage you can look up their births to find her maiden name

She would have remarried as Smith but only one Smith/Coward marriage which was in 1953

Thank you for your replies.

I am aware of, and support, privacy for potential living people. I wasn't sure if my aunt was still alive and thought if she had passed away this may have been found in any searches. This was the reason for the post.

Sadly she never had any children.

Thank you to all that have responded.

Do you know where she was living in 1939? The 1939 Register will show her unredacted if she has died, a black line if she is living. Sadly, I found an old flame had passed away in this way. It does come as a shock to see their name there so be prepared.

Marriage q3 1956 Wolverhampton 9b 2273 - Patricia A M FRANKLIN + Raymond G SMITH (not Reginald as previously reported)

? Marriage q4 1970 Wincanton 7c 1314 - Patricia J SMITH + Stephen M HILLIER ?
Apart from this 1970 marriage I cant see how her name changed from SMITH to HILLIER. Maybe there was yet another marriage!

Marriage q2 1929 Camberwell 1d 1430 - Harry FRANKLIN + Beatrice M L ROLL.
1939 register indicates that Beatrice changed her name to CLARKE but I cannot find a marriage

Possible siblings for Patricia
Robert H 1929 - died 1933?
Allan 1933 - maybe with grandmother Beatrice M ROLL in 1939
Ronald G 1940

This couple are together in 2005 at 12, Annesley Street, Llanelli, Dyfed, SA15 2PT. Their marriage ties in with opening post re location. So it would appear to rule out the below death.

A Patricia COWARD died in Newport district in 1998. Probate with Will. Date of birth 18 November 1931,

I am still confused as to why Beatrice is shown in the 1939 register as having changed her name from Franklin to CLARKE (in 1946?) but then gets buried as FRANKLIN.
In fact her death certificate seems to be done in both names.
Death q1 1971 Todmorden 2d 1473, Beatrice Marie L CLARKE born 8 Jan 1910
Death q1 1971 Todmorden 2d 1473, Beatrice Marie L FRANKLIN born 8 Jan 1910

I suppose getting a copy of the death certificate might explain it.

Then we have Patricia being married to Raymond SMITH, leaving or divorcing him and then getting married in Barnstaple as Patricia HILLIER to a man called COWARD. I suppose maybe she had got married in Scotland or perhaps just changed her name to HILLIER. The marriage certificate of her last marriage might explain.

Pretty sure this will be a red herring as I have a Patricia Coward born November 1931, died 1998 Monmouthshire. I knew her and from the information you have they are definitely not the same person.

Yes I decided the Patricia who died in 1998 was red herring last Friday - when I found the later death in Llanelli.

Well Debs only ever asked whether Pat, the ex wife of her uncle, was still alive and we answered that. All this stuff about Patricia's family was just us filling in the background and going down rabbit holes due to our curiosity.
I still have not sorted out how Patricia's name changed from SMITH to HILLIER after she left Debs' uncle. Maybe HILLIER was the surname of the famiky who adopted Patricia. Was she sent up north due to the war or because her parents had split up?
Still - time to close the book on this one.
