My Grand Uncle Bernard Tracey was born in Norwood, Norfolk, Massachusetts on Feb. 2nd 1917. His parents were Patrick and Mary Tracey. His mother died 7 months later in Sept. 1917. His siblings were Edward, Nora, Martin, Margaret, Mary and Stephen. I have found him and his family in the 1920 census in Norwood. He lived in Ireland from 1921 to 1940. He then returned to the USA and joined the navy until 1946. I can find no record of him after this point though. My family were told he was killed in a car crash in the USA, but we don't know where or when. Any information would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
John.

I have also seen this obituary for his brother Edward Tracey. However, I also know that he was unable to be found by his family for a number of years. They may have assumed he was still alive in 1975 for the benefit of the death notice, but may not have had proof either way at the time. I haven't limited my searches to post 1975 only, for this reason.

All the other information for him and his family that has been listed above is correct and matches my own findings.

These don't answer your question, but just in case you haven't seen them:

Passport application for Martin Tracey (with a picture of him on the next page to the right) - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tzx/

Bernard's WWII draft registration card has him in New York City with another address in Brooklyn written along the left side. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:WCB5-HLPZ?lang=en Maybe he returned there after the Navy?
-
Also, something that isn't online currently, but may be in the future:
Bernard's brother Martin married in Alabama in 1942 when he was in the Army per his address at Fort Benning - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:29F5-4W4?lang=en
However, there is also an entry in the New York City marriage license index for the same couple getting a marriage license in Bronx, New York on 7 Jun. 1948 with license #5512. Sometimes couples would do a repeat marriage ceremony in a church if they had a quick wedding before. In this case, my guess would be the earlier one was rushed due to him being in the military. Anyway, the marriage licenses from the Bronx have not been digitized yet, but they're in the process of doing that for many New York City records here - https://a860-historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov/search It's very slow going unfortunately, but hopefully everything will be up some day.
Anyway, the reason I go into it is that the marriage license may have witnesses to the wedding, so that might include the missing Bernard.

Thank you very much shelleyesq for those records. I've never seen them before and the pictures are excellent to have also.

I haven't yet found an answer, as to what became of Bernard Tracey, so my search still goes on. I do have 2 other questions though relating to this family which someone here may be able to help with. Maybe I should open a new thread for each question?
1. I am looking to locate Bernard's niece (*) Father Martin F Tracey and mother Violet Tracey. I don't know if she is still alive.
2. I'm looking for photos of Bernards brother, Edward Patrick Tracey as an adult. 1906-1975. Any recommendations of how I might go about this? His family don't seem to have any.
Thanks again in advance of any help or suggestions.
John.

Yes it would Sandra, thanks for that. No mention of Bernard in that, so maybe they knew he had passed by then.

Sandra, when you say that you can't see anything, do you mean newspaper reports?
The details you have for Martin are correct.

The tree at familysearch says Martin and Violet had a daughter Maureen, born 1952, Brooklyn, who married Thomas Guinn. Maureen is said to have died 2014 in Sacramento, CA. Thomas died 2025.

I couldn't find an obituary, but others might have other places to look.
Is that the daughter you are looking for?
Is it the daughter that is listed on the 1950 census in Brooklyn with Martin and Violet? I haven't found anything on her.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6XR7-KQ9J?lang=en
Or is it another daughter?
By the way, I worked on a Curran family in Norwood, but don't have the information anymore so not much help. Were they from Galway, on the north side of Galway Bay, by any chance?
-
@oldohiohome, I have all of Maureens details, thanks. The daughter I am looking for is the daughter that is listed on the 1950 census in Brooklyn with Martin and Violet, as you mentioned.
The Curran family were from Galway, yes. Mary Curran Tracey was my great grandmother.

ok.
Check your messages. Did that daughter marry, where and when, and to whom? Where do you know her to be last?
edited: Don't post "to whom" here, since he might be alive. Message me with what you know, if you like.
