Title: Name of the person baptized in this French record from 1587
Post by: jon541 on Friday 05 September 25 21:46 BST (UK)
Is anyone able to shed any light on the name of the infant baptized in this record?  Ignore the fact that it's in French as that only has a small bearing on the name ...

I can make out the rest of it: it's just the forename which eludes me.

Le d{it} jour a este baptize ? ? ?  fille de Claude de Launaye et de Anne Barbyer.

I think it's anne (small letter a, with a leading flourish above). Compare the general shape of Anne in the line below, and the single small a in a este.

Thanks Bookbox, I think you're probably right.  The word does appear to begin with a lower-case 'a' (complete with flourish as per the example earlier in the line, as you point out, and just to confuse the obvious comparison with the capitalized Anne in the line below) and I can't really see any other alternatives.  I toyed with 'Aisme' as a variant of 'Aimée' but it's a name that didn't really come into popular use until later.

Much appreciated - I've been staring at that for a couple of days!
