John Mortimer, born c1819 Kingsbridge, Devon, married Elizabeth Tapp in 1839. In 1851 he obtains a master or mates certificate and is absent from the 1851 census so probably at sea. His wife and five children plus wife's mother are in Kingswear, Devon. From that point I lose sight of him.
In 1861 Elizabeth is living in Guernsey as Mrs William G Smith, with her Mortimer children. William is also a mariner. I haven't found a marriage but by 1871 Elizabeth is boarding in St Peter's Port, describing herself as 'widowed' and working as a factory hand.
Can anyone help me with the fate of John please? Thank you.

To narrow the field of death - When was the last Mortimer child born?

I'm away from the tree right now but I can say that no more Mortimer children were born after 1851.

There's a Trinity House petition in 1852 for Elizabeth Mortimer, widow of John, of Kingswear, Devon. This would mean she's looking for financial support.

Marriage 29 Nov 1858 in Guernsey for William George Smith 39, son of John, of Plymouth and Elizabeth Mortimer, 41, daughter of John of Kingswear.
