William John Moore was the illegitimate child of Jeanie/Jane Moore. He was born 27th May 1893 Mill Street Catrine Sorn Ayrshire Scotland. In 1894 his name was changed to James McBlane Moore. His mother Jane Moore born 1869,married Henry Field 5th September 1895 Roman Catholic Church Hamilton. He was born 1875 New York USA. The 1901 census has Henry and Jane (incorrectly transcribed as Fieldon) with children Mary born 1895, Henry born 1899.
To complicate matters Jane/Jeanie already had an illegitimate son James Moore born 6th January 1889 Stewart Place Catrine Ayrshire Scotland died 1931 Danville, Vermilion, Illinois USA
Why would she have William John's name changed to James when she already had son James.
I can't find either of these two children on the 1901 census.
I would appreciate any help on trying to find what happened to William John who became James McBlane Moore and could his father have been a McBlane?
Thank you
dinkey

What official documents show the birth info & change of name for William?
The 1893 birth for William John Moore was registered in Dalziel - Lanarkshire. Nothing in Ayrshire.
The birth for James was registered in 1893 Sorn Ayrshire
Re the 1889 James - In 1891 he the 2yr old living with Malcolm & Mary Howie who I assume are the mother & stepfather of Jane?
In 1901 he is shown as Howie & is living with grandmother Mary Howie who is now shown as Jane Howie??

This is the document showing the name change

Thank you
I don't know how that type of change is recorded on the SP website etc. I would have expected to see 2 entries - one for the original 1893 entry & the other cross ref for the 1894 amendment.
However - they may delete the original 1893 entry - hence no trace when searching
Mystery as to why 2 children from the same mother but born 4yrs apart were called James.

The original birth certificate 1893

I am probably clutching at straws here but I am curious about his middle name being McBlane.
There is a James Martin McBlane born 27th May 1894 Auchinleck. 1901 census address Stable Row Auchinleck Ayrshire age 7 with parents James Martin McBlane and Agnes maiden name Crawford ( I can't find a marriage for this couple).
On 10 July 1903 James sailed on the Ship Colombia shows status Married age 43 Occ. Miner. Destination port New York. He must have returned to Agnes at Auchinleck because they had a daughter Margaret (Maggie) born 18th May 1906 Auchinleck Ayrshire.
By December 1911 the family are living in New York.

Hi looking at the correction on the name change the Moore has been crossed out and name is just James McBlane
As mentioned on your other post regarding James Mcblane and Agnes Crawford
I think this is William John Moore now Jame McBlane on the 1901 census
Address Stable Row Auchinleck Ayrshire
James Mcblain age 41 ( coal miner )
Agnes Mcblain ( Crawford ) 35 as mentioned before no marriage found
James Mcblain age 7 born about 1894 Caterine Ayrshire ( no birth found on S P)

James Martin Macblane ( a middle name been added now )
Birth date 27 May 1894 ( out by a year )
Death date 9 July 1960 Breesport Chemung New York
His marriage 1915 Chemung gives his parents as James Mc Blane Agnes Crawford
So definitely the same family from 1901 census
So looking at it James McBlane senior the possible father

I think you could be right about James McBlane Snr being the possible father. I have a DNA match with a Michael McBlane 1956- 2023 predicted as my 4th cousin or half 3rd cousin 1x removed. Michael's father was William James and he was the son of James McBlane born 1894.

Yes I would say that's James McBlane with his father James Mcblane senior
So that would explain how she had another son named James Moore born 1899
