Title: Mistakes on Wikitree
Post by: BridgetM on Wednesday 27 August 25 15:58 BST (UK)
I am becoming so frustrated with the mistakes on Wikitree, especially when they concern my own line of Machells. I’ve commented on a Machell profile numerous times over the years, asking for the errors to be sorted, but nothing has changed.

I have spent years researching my line of Machells, and weeks in the Kendal Record Office sorting through old deeds, and probably know more about the Kendal Machells than anyone has ever wanted to know!

For mistakes to be promulgated, and then copied blindly by anyone on Ancestry or FindMyPast, seems absolutely pointless.

Someone copied a family line one by one from my TP tree onto Wikitree and made a real pigs ear of it, they also copied images but cropped the frames and text I added to identify the people or places. Long story short I gave up offering corrections when the manager pm'd me saying they had made numerous mistakes but didn't have the time to correct things and asked me to not contact them again.

Familysearch has the opposite problem in that anyone and everyone can edit things which someone has diligently corrected previously. I don't get involved with collaborative tree sites now or tend to offer corrections to Ancestry or MH tree owners as it's not worth the hassle. My priority is now my tree and to heck with the others though I do try and show my workings and reasoning in the hope of attracting positive connections.

I’m beginning to agree with you, Glen! Wikitree raises my blood pressure so much, it’s probably best avoided. :)

FS is too free and Wikitree too restrictive, I can see the reasoning for edits needing to be authorised but reliance on a single manager invites problems.

Wikitrees are no more reliable than any trees you find on Ancestry.
