Title: Help needed with Portuguese ancestor
Post by: baytree1970 on Wednesday 20 August 25 18:21 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm researching a Jose Antonis Ennes, a sailor who lived in Newport and Cardiff in Wales, but was reported to be from Lisbon originally. Ancestry have his marriage cert to Mary Ann Jenkins on which his name is written as above, in addition to the the anglicised "Joseph Ennis". The cert also gives his father as Joseph, a merchant. He was born in 1848. He died in Wales in 1897. A number of shipping records on Ancestry also list his name in the Portuguese version and his birth place as Lisbon.

I've never had to research in Portugal before, any help would be much appreciate.

thanks!

Marriage was 1875 & he only appears on the 1891 census confirming birthplace etc

Coincidentally the US 1880 census has a Joseph Ennis b 1848 Portugal - unmarried - occ miner - living in Colorado

Have you checked on Family Search?

His wife and young children appear on the 1881 census, he is absent, presumably at sea.

I think the US info is, as you say, purely conincidental.

I did look on Family Search for a baptism but without luck.

Where else can I look?
