On 7 July 1863 at Histon William Gawthroup married Mary Ann Allen (father recorded as James)
the 1881 census records Mary Ann's birth as 1842 in Somersham.
Can anyone see details of her parents?
-
Any occupation listed for James?
-
He was a labourer.
-
There is a James who is a farmer in 1851.
He has 4 daughters one Mary A and one Eliza.
One of the witnesses was Eliza so possible.
-
Did Mary Ann have a son Moses? If so this might be useful.
1881
James Allen 67 head
Mary Ann Allen 62 wife
Moses Gawthorp 15 grandson
-
Possibly five children, ...... William and Mary Ann didn't co-habit as far as I can see.
Eliza Ann 1863
Moses 1866
Louisa 1867
John William 1870
Frederick 1872

Have you checked freebmd for a birth for Mary then used GRO online to find her mothers maiden name?
Have you looked for her on the 1851 census?
-
If Moses is missing from the Gawthorp family in 1881 I would say you have found the parents of Mary Ann you were looking for.
What do you mean they didn’t co-habit? Are they not with the children in 1871/1881?
-
In 1891, 1901 and 1911 Mary Ann is living in Chesterton and William in Histon.
-
So are you satisfied her parents now are James & Mary Ann?
Who are all the Gawthorp children with in 1871/1881?
-
Using the info in Reply 4 you can look for her on the 1851 census. She is easily found using the birthplace given in your opening post
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/places/regindex2-2.pdf shows her birthplace came under St Ives RD & there is a probable birth on freebmd

They were living together in 1881, in Histon,
.....but in 1871 Mary Ann was in Chatteris and William in Histon.
Im confident that James & Mary Ann Allen are her parents, thank you.

and it looks like James married Mary Ann Steadman in 1939, St Ives, Hunts.
