Hello I am trying to find the marriage allegation/bond of Daniel King & Anna Jex who married at Blythburgh on 11 October 1759
The marriage is on Ancestry here:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/62754/images/62751_73022001099_1989-00017?pId=1937361 (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/62754/images/62751_73022001099_1989-00017?pId=1937361)
He was of Bulcamp which was an extra-parochial place and so I am not sure if this means he could have got the licence from a variety of places.
It appears both he and his wife were minors, but I need the allegation to see how old he was.
There are two baptisms of Daniel King in East Bergholt in 1738 and 1740, sons of Daniel, so I am trying to work out if the first one died (although there is no burial for the first Daniel).
His 1812 burial shows he was 74 so the 1738 baptism matches his declared age at death, but not sure how this can all work.
Any help finding the marriage licence would be helpful.
Thank you,
Jon

One of the witnesses is a Thomas King.
How does he fit in - perhaps a brother?
ADDED
It doesn't say Daniel is a minor just Anna Jex.
-
It's 41 miles from East Bergholt to Blythburgh a bit too far away?
Bulchamp was an area within the Blythburgh
-
Blythburgh is in Suffolk - contact the County Archive.
Suffolk Record Office seems to have two general
References for their collections:- Number: FAA/23 Covering Dates: 1663-1859
Description:
FAA:50/2/77 marriage licence bonds 1663 - 1678
Sometimes the Genealogical Society (SofG / SOG) has some items filmed for various counties, but they charge too I believe.
I think Lambeth Palace Archives hold some too?
Some Registers of Marriages make no mention of Widower or Widow, occupation, nor age, so the Licence Allegations and Bonds can be highly useful for this information.

On his second marriage in 1771, one of the witnesses is a John King, could he also be a brother?

There's a marriage of a Samuel King of the parish of Bulcamp in 1772 in Sotherton, (where all Daniel's children by both wives are baptised). Daniel King is a churchwarden there.

It says "with consent of guardians" at the end, which made me think it was not just Anna Jex who was a minor. Would she have had more than one guardian that needed to give permission do you think? Perhaps if her father was dead and there was a will maybe?

I am trying to work this out myself. I thought he could be a brother of Daniel King.
The witness signatures of Thomas King on this 1759 marriage and the marriage of Thomas King of Blythburgh in 1769 at St Mary, Huntingfield to Bridget Stannard appear to be the same.
This would mean Thomas was presumably over 21 and born before c1738.
This does not fit in with the marriage of Daniel King's parents Daniel King and Judith Higham/Hyam in 1737 and the baptisms of their children. So not sure yet.

That is what I thought at first too. But there are not many people named Daniel King in the Suffolk registers so it made it easier to look at them all.
In Blythburgh in 1748 a Daniel and Judith King had a son Samuel King baptised there and this therefore made it possible to connect to the marriage and children at East Bergholt.
So Daniel King married Judith Hyham at East Bergholt in 1737.
They had these children in the registers at East Bergholt:
Daniel King 1738/9
Daniel King 1740
Mary King 1743
Samuel King buried 1745
Then this son in Blythburgh:
Samuel King 1748
It also seems they must have had Judith King of Bulcamp who married Arthur Ellis in 1773.
I think as the two Daniel baptisms are only a year apart and there is not a burial of the first Daniel, that perhaps this is a private baptism in 1738/9 and then being received into the church in 1740.
But only the marriage licence can help with Daniel's age. It could be that maybe the name of one of the children has been incorrectly recorded and one may be Thomas. I am trying to check all this out.
Going back to my identification of the East Bergholt couple with my Kings, I then saw on the 1759 Blythburgh marriage of Daniel King and Anna Jex that the other witness to Thomas King was a Robert Higham.
As Daniel's mother was a Judith Hyham, I theorised that that Robert was a first cousin and started researching the Heigham|Higham|Hyam|Hyham|Heyam family.
It turns out that Judith Hyham|King was the aunt of this Robert Higham. Her brother was Robert Higham senior and Judith and Robert were both baptised in Ipswich in 1711/12 and 1722/3.
Their parents were John Heigham|Higham|Hyam|Hyham|Heyam and Judith Peed, who married in Witnesham in 1704.
John died in 1722 and in 1726 at Ipswich Judith remarried James Kingsbury of East Bergholt, which is evidently how her namesake daughter came to be married there, as she must have moved with her mother and new stepfather.
I have been enjoying the Suffolk parish registers and all this sleuthing as I am sure you can imagine!

Yes John King is Daniel's brother and was baptised in 1743 in East Bergholt.
John King married Sarah Eastoe in 1767 at Blythburgh and he died in 1779.
The burial registers at this time do not record any family relationships, just state the name of the person buried.
However his wife Sarah had a "base born" son in 1781 and stated to be a widow, so this is known to be his burial in 1779.
Kind regards,
Jon

Yes Samuel King is another of Daniel's brothers and was baptised in 1748 in Blythburgh.
He married Jane Fisk in 1772 as you say and he died in 1794 and was buried at Blythburgh.

Daniel King is a churchwarden there.
I hadn't seen that though! Any idea what page that is on please?
Thank you.

When you say "the Blythburgh" with a definite article, is that how people refer to the area locally?
Thanks for all your help and looking into this for me.

If you have access to Ancestry and go to the images of the Suffolk registers. Then Sotherton (1675-1812) you get a book of 144 pages. I found his signature at the bottom of pages 91 and 93 - there may be more

Thanks so much for this. I have had a look and found he was church warden at Sotherton from at least 1779 to at least 1784. Isaac Newson was church warden in 1777, so it will have been after this. This was a great little addition to add to his life story. Thank you.

I have checked the Britain Marriage Licenses on FindMyPast for Daniel King and Anna Jex and found nothing, I checked that database as many Suffolk marriage licenses were through a Norfolk court, the Norwich Consistory Court, so I thought I would check to see if they had the license through there but cannot find anything. I checked Suffolk Archives website and typed in Daniel King 1759 and nothing.
Several of my Suffolk ancestors had marriage licenses at Norwich Consistory Court.

Thanks very much for looking at them for me. I really appreciate that. I will wait and see if Suffolk Archives come up with anything.

Maybe the allegation/bond was through a certain London court that has not yet indexed their records.
