Post by: Jan Prit on Saturday 09 August 25 23:17 BST (UK)
Good Morning Everyone. I am trying to find the baptism/birth of Thomas Pearce (grocer) he married a Joan/Jone Heiley/Heeley on the 5/2/1670 Quaker Bristol Somerset UK. I have the record of Joan/Jone not sure of birth 1649? Poole Dorset Somerset UK her father Peter Heiley/Heeley born 6/7/1598 his father was Reverend William Heilly from St. James Dorset Poole. This is a very interesting ancestor and finding out more information is always interesting. :-[

Seems to be some confusion between towns and counties?

Dorset and Somerset are counties.
Poole is a town in the county of Dorset. Nowhere near Somerset; nearest point some 55 miles away..  :D

Bristol is usually identified as being in Gloucestershire.
But, some suburbs were originally in Somerset, and changed to Bristol in the 1930's.

Being pedantic, The City and County of Bristol was declared a County Corporate in 1373.
Even today not recognised as such by the Association of British Counties!

I was born in Bristol, and grew up in Somerset, just outside Bristol!

Historically, Quakers could only marry "within the meeting", meaning that both bride and groom had to be Quakers.

So if Joan/Jone was a Quaker, then Thomas would also be a Quaker.

As Thomas' father was a Reverend, the marriage would be very unlikely.

P.S.
When Find My Past asks you to sign up, there is usually a fainter box to LogIn.
You can use your existing FindMyPast Login credentials.
I have just done exactly that!

Hello thanks KGarrad, for your reply. It was Joan/Jone's Keeley/Keily grandfather was a Reverend a William Heily. I am finding that most of the Pearce/Peice ancestors came from Bristol. Churches St. Philip & Jacob. St. James. Thanking you. :-[
