Hello
I hope that you might be able to help me.
I am currently trying to trace the family of an elderly friend. I have had some success but as I don't have a subscription to Ancestry at present I am limited in my research. My friends father was John Wilfred Bassett b. 4 July 1904 and died 8 July 1909 Ilkeston Derbyshire. He married 4 June 1932 to Sarah Ann Hallam. b. 13 April 1901 Shropshire. I have been able to go back one more generation and find John's father a George Basset b. 1877 Birmingham d. 1958 Ilkeston. He married 26 Dec 1896 to Ann Issett b. 1874. I also found their children.
I would love to be able to go a little further back if possible. I think George's father was also a George but that is all I can find.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you. :)
-
I think you need to alter that 1909 death date to 1990 ;)
-
The 1896 marriage says his father is George Bassett deceased occ Gardener. One of the witnesses was a Joseph Bassett.
He was married in Ilkeston but resident in Heanor
-
Yes my mistake! It should be 1990.
Thank you for the extra information. The Joseph must have been a relative.
-
Do you know who George the gardener married please?
-
In 1891 he is at Nook End, Heanor which ties in with the address on his marriage
George Basset Married 51 occ Gardener bn Claybrook, Leicestershire
Frances 48 bn Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire
William Basset 23 occ Coal miner bn Birmingham
Joseph Basset 19 occ General labourer bn Birmingham
George Basset 14 occ Coal miner bn Birmingham
Nellie Basset 11 Scholar bn Birmingham
Annie Basset 7 Scholar bn Birmingham
-
Thank you so much for this help. I see one of the sons George at 14 is also a miner and I have heard this as a family memory. This has given me more to work on. I may find Frances's maiden name now with knowing her age too

Hi
If you don't have an Ancestry sub - did you know that all England & Wales censuses to 1911 are available free on Family Search.
Here's the link

-
Thank you for the last two replies. Firstly for the mother's maiden name and also for the information about census on Family Search. They will be a good resource for me to continue. Many thanks! :)
-
Do you think that the mother of Annie Bassett was also Frances Hughes like her siblings?
-
She was Annie Maria Bassett b 1883 Birmingham mmn Hughes

That is great. Thank you so much. :)
-
In 1881 FindMyPast has them transcribed as George and Fanny BARSET living Spring walk, Birmingham. RG11/ 2973 folio137 page 55
-
That's interesting. Is Fanny sometimes used for Frances?
-
Yes, Fanny is an alternative to Frances
-
Thank you.
-
I can't see a marriage for George & Frances (Fanny) & am not finding them on the 1871
-
Well in 1871 George would have been 31 and their eldest child not yet born.
-
1881 census suggests 2 children born pre 1871 census, William & Joseph.

I haven't been able to find this.

I will continue my research tomorrow with your help, thank you. :)

It is strange that the marriage for George and Frances is not there isn't it. Amazing you have found out more details for me though. Many thanks. :)

Joseph’s birth address in 1871 was 28, Francis Street, Aston. Father George was a gardener. Struggling to find this address in 1871 census. His dob 24th November 1871. He appears in 1939 war register with this dob.

Thank you for this additional information which my friend will enjoy hearing about so much.
Is there any way of finding the father's name of the previous generation to this family of gardener George without his marriage stating father's name?
-
Probable death of George Bassett senior (gardener).
Deaths Sep 1893
Bassett George 52 Basford 7b 92
SS
Added, believe Fanny Bassett remarried 1895 either Thomas Fletcher or Edward Simms.
-
Thank you!
The remarriage is interesting. Fanny would have been only around 50 and several children to care for.
-
1901 census for Fanny Fletcher, daughter Annie M Bassett also in household.

Final post as I need to go to dentist. The digital birth certificate of William £3 would possibly narrow down an address in 1871 and record if George was still a gardener.
