Good morning
I would be most grateful for the look-up and/or any relevant information regarding the imprisoned of William McKay age 37 in Salford 1867, born Edinburgh c 1830.
Thank you.
Kind regards

He and a Patrick Sheridan were serving one month's hard labour for stealing a gross of ? strings at Newton. I can't make out the missing word - beef? beet?

Hi
Well I am really hedging my bets that this is the ancestor I have been looking for. My William Mackay was a whip string maker who lived Newton Heath around 1861. I am always reluctant to claim somebody but I think it's adding up it may be him. I believe this William was born in Edinburgh which is a piece of information that has eluded me up until now.🤞
Thank you so much ;D
Kindest regards
Amanda.

The entry does state that he was a Whipmaker from Edinburgh and that his last known address was Sarah Street, Ardwick.

I see the theft of " ... Gut strings ..."

I don't think I've ever been so happy to find an ancestor who did time. Lol. This is great additional information. It confirms William is my gt grandfather. This has opened up a whole new avenue of research for me.
Thank you so much.

Hi
Thank you. This is quite fascinating and a bit ickky. I will investigate this but I wonder if it is connected to whip string making though why he would steel them is beyond me.
Kindest regards

Agree the "ickky"!
In another appearance in Court Garner, as a "gut rope" manufacturer, was told he had "... no right to set up works to poison the neighbourhood".
