How sure are you of the 1853 birthdate?
The only baptism I can see is this one, a year earlier, which gives another possible middle name for Samuel
1852 07 08
Samuel Sadler Boler
Father John BOLER (farmer)
Mother Anne
Abode High Oakham
Church MANSFIELD St Peter and St Paul
Alternatively there's also an 1858 birth for a Samuel Sadler in the Mansfield region, but no baptism for this one on my disc.
When and where did Samuel marry, and under what name?
-
The 1852 Samuel is in Leicester in 1891; he says he's married, but there's no wife to be seen on the census. Is this your man?
-
Many thanks to you all.
Samuel Boler b. 1854 Mansfield
Parents: John Boler 1790-1879 b. Clipstone d. Mansfield & Ann Cotes 1812-1879 b. Shirland, Derbyshire d. Mansfield.

Samuel left his wife after 1878 on discovering she was having an affair with neighbour baker John Featherstone. The 9 children from 1878 to 1895 have father as "John Boler)
Sorry don't have copies anymore of the Census.
Thanking you all.

It's helpful if you can give as much info as you have, as it saves us searching for stuff that you already know.
I can see Samuel (Bowler) and Mary (Burn) marriage cert online; Nov 6 1873, at the parish church of Eccles, Lancs.
I can see a large number of Boler children with mmn Byrne subsequently born in the Salford district, and I can see that the first two (Alice, 1873/4 and James, 1875/6) were baptised with the father's name as Samuel. I can't see any other infant baptisms until Herbert (1889) in which the father's name is given as John Boler. Do you have birth certificates for any of the other children? How do you know that the marriage broke up around the time that you state and for the reason that you give?
Given that the last positive siting of Samuel Boler was in Leicester, I've checked the main municipal graveyards serving the town centre (Welford Rd and Gilroes), and he's not there under the name of Boler, Bowler or Bouler. Neither is he in the Leic workhouse records.
I see that he was listed as James in the 1861 census, when he was with his parents; what other instances of his using this name have you come across and how can you be sure that it's the same man, if it's a different name?
Is there any more info that you've got that might be useful?

John Frederick Boler was baptised at St. Pauls, Pendleton in 1883 (Father John Boler)
Although John Henry Boler left his wife he turned up at her funeral in 1920 and to disappear again and never to be found. He was Merchant Seaman.
My uncle Eric Boler, the son of J.F. Boler and Emma Hamer told me the story of the Featherstone connection and presume his father must have told him at some time.
Further someone with a connection to John Henry Boler told me a similar story and that the wife of Featherstone had a fight with Mary Byrne and left her husband. Uncle Eric said all this happened in or after 1878.
So where Samuel Boler went after that is a mystery and the 1891 could be correct or a coincidence.
Thank you steve62

I had an ancestor in Victorian Leicester who had done an apprenticeship as a wheelwright but who was often, as an adult, listed as carpenter.
-
OK Forget the City and Counties Directory entry. It is dated 1864 when Samuel was 11 and it is a Confectioner.
Probably same family though.
-
I think the confectioner Samuel was associated with Sookholme and Leeming Street - maybe another branch of the same family, but not this main branch.
