Hello all,
I'm trying to determine if I'm on the right track into my 2x great aunt Sarah Elizabeth Dixon.
Sarah was one of 5 illegitimate children born to my 3x great grandmother Jane Dixon who herself is a bit of a mystery.
The rest of the siblings that I know of were
James Dixon born 1856 Hayton
Mary Jane Dixon born 1859 Hayton
Margaret Ann Dixon born 1868
John Dixon born 1872
I think I have found Jane on the 1881 census but this time she is going by the surname of Hogson and she's living with her son John Dixon who is 9 years old, she's stating she is married but I have found no records to say she was.
Sarah Elizabeth Dixon was born 21st March 1863 Fenton, Hayton, Cumberland.
I found her living with her grandfather and mother in the 1871 and in 1881 she is living with her Aunt Mary Little nee Dixon.
There is a marriage certificate on ancestry for a Sarah Elizabeth Dixon and George Ogle Gray in Staines. She gives her father as John Dixon shoe maker but we don't know who her father actually was. Her grandad was John Dixon but he was a labourer.

The 1939 register has that Sarah Elizabeth with a birth date of 2 March 1862. The other census records has Sarah Elizabeth with birthplace Brampton or Carlisle and the same year of birth. I notice in the 1911 census the couple have named one of their daughters Mary Jane (and two sons John and James) - could be after her sister and brothers. Her sister Mary Jane Dixon married Thomas Maclagan - they actually also married in London as Thomas was a house painter.
Many thanks for any help provided.

Does her sister name a father when she marries? **
Where are Jane’s other children in 1861/1871?
** father John Dixon farmer

James is with his grandparents John and Mary in 1861, and in 1871 is a Servant in Walton Low, Cumberland.
Mary Jane is also with her grandparents in 1861 and in 1871 she is still living with grandparents and sisters Margaret and Mary Jane.
John I believe is with his mother in 1881 as mentioned above.

Just to add the marriage you mention for Mary Jane just has Mary on the marriage certificate.
The hints on ancestry point to a Mary Jane Dixon marriage to Samuel Blakeney in 1882 Cockermouth district.
So has this marriage been ruled out in favour of the one in London to Thomas Maclagan?

Yes, the Thomas Maclagan marriage is definitely correct.
Mary Jane was a domestic servant in 1881 12 Argyle Street Westminster - same address as her residence on the marriage certificate.

I did see that but put it to one side, as I haven't found any links to her in Tynemouth but you never know I suppose. ???
In the 1891 census she is living with her daughter Margaret Ann who married John Lapping. She is described as a widow ???

Thank you SS. I see it now under Hodgson not Hogson.
What surname does she have in 1891 - widow under Hodgson?
Are there any likely male Hodgson deaths between 1881 and 1891 that may account for a husband.
