I'm posting this on behalf of Wayne Devlin the grandson of Joseph Devlin. I am assisting Wayne find info on his grandad.
I’m trying to trace information about a farm in Toberlyon (also spelled Toberlion), County Cavan, that was run by a man named John Bannon in the 1920s. My grandfather, Joseph Devlin, was sent there at age 16 in 1926 after leaving St Patrick’s Industrial School in Belfast.
Joseph was born in Newry Workhouse in 1910 and committed to St Patrick’s as a child. In 1926, he was released and sent across the border to County Cavan to work on this Bannon farm. I’m hoping someone might help me:
Identify the exact farm or location of the Bannon property in or near Toberlyon/Toberlion Share any records or family information relating to the Bannon family in that area Help me understand the process by which boys from Northern institutions were sent to work in the South, especially during the delicate post-Civil War period (1926) — was this common?
I have census information confirming a Catholic John Bannon (b. ~1843) living in Toberlyon in 1911, married to Margaret, with children including Patrick, Bridget, Mary E, Joseph, and Alice.
If anyone has any leads, local knowledge, old maps, or advice on how I might uncover more about Joseph’s time there, I would be deeply grateful.

A land sale from 28 May 1886: Cavan Weekly News and General Advertiser, refers to:

From the marriage record, John's father was Terence Bannon, a farmer.
He's on the Griffith's Valuation of 1857 at Toberlyan.

Tubberlion featured in a murder case in 1856 — the murder of Miss Hinds. Terence Banon [sic] was a witness.

TRESPASS CASE.
Pat Bannon summoned his cousin John Bannon for allowing 9 head of asses to trespass on his land at Toberlyon on the 16th and 17th inst. To the defendant—The road doesn't divide my land from yours. The public have no right of way through the gate. There's a style for them to cross. Delendant—Will your worships adjourn this case till next court day, and I wiil bring forward witnesses. I proffered to give Mr Magarvey 5s, and send a car for him to come up to look at it. I also proffered Pat Bannon money for the trespass, and he wouldn't take it. Plaintiff—You only offered me 6d. Mr Benison—The defendant is in the habit of leaving this gate open, and it's a shame to see friends and neighbours disputing in this way. Mr Magarvey said be saw the place, and the mearings didn't appear to bo properly made up. Mr Benison—We will adjourn this case till next court day for the mearings to be put in proper repair.
Notes
The word 'mearings' refers to boundaries.
It isn't explained anywhere in the whole court report who Mr Magarvey might be.

15 was the standard discharge age from Induatrial Schools in 1904 & 1906, obviously this is 2 decades later, so presumably had risen to 16 & their responsibiity ended.
