After updates my taskbar icons have vanished. I have Windows 10, I have tried the trick of sliding the bar to the right and then back to the bottom but this does nothing for me. any help at all please?

Googled problem.
First option says press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager (easier way I got it by right click on clear Taskbar) then find Windows Explorer (I used search box to find it) in list, right click on it and select Restart. Don't know what happens then as not wanting to try it myself.
Not sure if this will help but if you right click on a clear part of the taskbar you will be able to Task Settings. On there you can scroll down to Notifications and then check that the icons are turned on.

Thank you for your reply. I did right click on the empty bar. The settings are showing the icon setting as non click able. I cannot move the slider to on. It is greyed out.

If the Task Manager approach doesn't work, press Windows/R and enter explorer in the Open: box.

Have you looked in Settings and Personalisation - Taskbar?

I was just about to say:

Hello Gadget, yes I can get onto the taskbar settings with no problem. When I go on "Notification area" and click "select which icons appear on taskbar" I get a slider that says always show all icons in the notification area. I slide this to ON but when I go back to Taskbar settings page it then clicks to off. Also on the taskbar Under " Multiple displays " the taskbar is OFF but I cannot use this slider to put it on as it is greyed out. Under the "turn system icons on or off" the clock is ON volume/Network and power are greyed out and not slide able. I can slide all the others with no problem.

Not sure ...and I've now got problems with my Win 11 set up. It's reverted!

Sorry to hear about your windows 11 Gadget. My daughter has told me try and avoid it at all costs!! I have managed to get my icons back. I right clicked on the start button and found a slider in there!

I solved it quire quickly, larkspur.
I think that I had not closed it down properly as I was doing 698! things and it seemed to revert to the standard format. I turned it off and left it.
Next day I switched it on and all was back to normal :D
I still prefer Win 10, which is still on my laptop, although I can upgrade. Still think I will keep version 10 there though.

Glad you have both got the problems solved.
I must admit I have not had any problems with Windows 11 (touch wood!).
Handy to know about right clicking on the start icon, if we remember it.
