Looking for help in locating any records of Susan Martin born c.1826 in Bridport.
In 1841 she appears, aged 15, to be working as a female servant in Church Street, Hackney.
[Class: HO107; Piece: 698; Book: 6; Civil Parish: St John Hackney; County: Middlesex; Enumeration District: 12; Folio: 6; Page: 4; Line: 23; GSU roll: 438812].
Then on 28th May 1849 she marries Henry Temple at All Saints Poplar giving her father's name as "John Martin, gent". She is 23 years old.
So I have nothing before 1841. She remained in the Poplar/Tower Hamlets area of London. She was widowed in 1860 and working as a charwoman in 1861. I haven't yet found out if she re-married [she was only 34 when she was widowed] or when she died.
Thanks :)

In the absence if any other info a possibility to consider is that she was illegitimate & her mother married Mr Martin & she took his surname
-
Can you rule out the Susan Martin who died 1913 Willesden Middlesex born 1827 in case she reverted to Martin for some reason.
Is 1861 the last sighting of her?

I was thinking along those lines but differently. That she was illegitimate and Martin was her mother's maiden name. Then at her marriage in 1849, John Martin, gent was invented.

Yes. I can't find her in 1871. I have searched for the youngest child, Sarah Caroline born 1859 but she died in 1862. The next youngest was Emily but I can't find her at all. And then Alfred Noah born 1855. I have found him in 1871 in Ramsgate, Kent as an apprentice baker. He had a few months in Poplar Workhouse in 1868.
The census references for Susan Temple [Martin] in 1851 and 1861 are:-
Class: HO107; Piece: 1554; Folio: 483; Page: 42; GSU roll: 174786
Class: Rg 9; Piece: 307; Folio: 95; Page: 56; GSU roll: 542611
I hadn't thought that she might have reverted to her maiden name.

RG 9/307/95 p56
So a GRO digital image of the youngest child's death would be the way forward. I will order tomorrow.
Do you think "Poplar Union" would point to the workhouse?
I have ruled out the Susanna Temple/Frederick Francis marriage on 17th Oct 1869 in Limehouse. She was a spinster with her father's name William Temple.

How sure are you about the 1841 census entry for Susan in Hackney. There is a Susannah Martin aged 14 living in Poplar, not born in county.

Not sure of it at all. Poplar seems a better fit. Thank you.

Thank you everyone. I have much more to work with now than I did a few hours ago. I'll follow everything through tomorrow. Susan Martin is a brickwall smashed. :D

The only way to be certain is getting her death certificate to see what it says but there is a
Susan Martin age 82 widow born Harrow living Sub-registration district Willesden with her granddaughters Emily Martin 25 & Catherine Kelly 18 in 1911
