Hello,
I am trying to make a link between two EDGE families from Malpas in Cheshire, but I’m having no luck.
I have Caroline EDGE, the daughter of Ruth EDGE (Spinster), baptised 22 September 1827. Unfortunately, I can find no other family information on them.
I would ideally like to find a connexion with the family of James EDGE, baptised 19 March 1797 in Malpas. He married Ruth RICHARDSON on 22 November 1813, again, in Malpas.
Can anyone help?
Thank you.
-
I note that the baptism for Caroline EDGE says Ruth's abode is Bickley.
-
The James Edge baptism 1797 refers to Charles and Hannah "... of Dn ..." Have you established what Dn is - possibly Dodleston? Dutton?
Added - it's Duckington.

Dean Maddy52 and hanes teulu,
Thank you for your help.
(Charles and Hannah. Malpas. This is really interesting. If it works, it solves my problem. James Edge, baptised 19 March 1797.
The only problem is that I have this James’s death as occurring in 1849.
The James I’m looking for appeared in the 1861 and 1871 censuses in Wood Street, Nantwich and married Sarah Crane.)
So ...
My great grandfather was James EDGE, baptised in Nantwich on 23 October 1848.
He was baptised ‘out of wedlock’, to Caroline EDGE. On the Parish Record, there is no other information except that she was a ‘Spinster’.
Coincidentally, Caroline was also born ‘out of wedlock’.
She was baptised in Malpas (noted as living in Bickley) on 22 September 1827. Her mother was Ruth EDGE, simply noted as a ‘Singlewoman’.
This is the only information I can find.
I would therefore like to know who the other members of their EDGE families were.
This is my problem.

When I was looking yesterday, I noticed there were a couple of EDGE families of Bickley around the right time period. From memory there was Richard and Ann EDGE and Charles and Rebecca EDGE who had a number of children baptised. However no Ruth's that I could see. I'll have another look tomorrow. :)

Chester Chronicle, 9 Jan 1846
Caroline Edge, alias Lee, 18, stealing a pair of stays at Wistaston, aquitted.
Intriguing - age "fits".
-
I keep coming back to a marriage of Ruth EDGE to Charles LEAR on 24 Nov 1829 at Chester. However, it says she was a widow. Both signed by "mark" and witnesses were Thomas LEE and Edwin J SIDDALL (who appears on a number of marriage entries, so presumably the curate or similar).
Interesting that the name is similar to Caroline EDGE, alias LEE.

The ‘name flexibility’ is interesting.
(I’ve almost had a breakthrough, but not quite.)
In the 1851 Census for Nantwich, Caroline is married to a William Taylor and they are living in Wood Street.
When I checked the marriage record - they had married two years previously on 12 August 1849 - Caroline had called herself ‘Catharine’, aged 21. This may have been a genuine mistake, and she gives her father as a James Edge (deceased).
I’ve looked in the 1841 Census for him, but have, as yet, found nothing …

There's a James and Ruth Edge on the '41 Census at Bickerton, both aged 45 and born in County.
There are FindMyPast baptisms, parents James, a labourer and Ruth, place Bickerton for -
Emma 2 Mar 1823, Susannah 9 Sep 1832, Rebecca 16 May 1834 and Ruth 9 Dec 1835
but none of the children are with them in '41. Rebecca died at 10 weeks old, Susan(nah) and Ruth appear a few entries after James/Ruth on the '41 Census with an Edge family.
Also, baptism of a William Lear, 22 Dec 1829, Malpas, parents Charles, a labourer and Ruth.

Ruth Edge, age 59, is in Wood Street in '51, now a widow, with Susan and Ruth.
