Im looking for any help/information you may be able to offer regarding Sarah Conless.
She married JAMES HESKETH in 1879. There appears to be 2 marriages…one Church of England and one catholic. She passed away in 1905 in Liverpool and is in Ford Catholic cemetery.
In her marriage certificate she stated that her father was called Thomas Conless.
I’m unable to find a birth, siblings or census records for her or her father. It feels like that just appeared…I’m sure there must be name variations that I’m not finding…
I have a few avenues that may be possible but unfortunately I’ve been unable to clarify them…
I started a post on here a while back where she came up while I was researching the heskeths but I’d like to keep this separate from that since the information on various different people started to become confusing.
I really hope somebody is able to shed some light on this for me because I’m really struggling.
Thank you in advance :)
-
What does she give as her birthplace on census records please?
Might she have come over from Ireland for example and be found there before her marriage.
Is there an occupation for her father on the marriage certificate?
-
Possibly
CORLESS, SARAH ROGERSON

-
I wondered if it should be Corless but the marriage does look to be Conless.
I can only see one marriage - St Nicholas, Liverpool - Church of England.
-
Either way not helping to find her :-\
Birth registration for daughter Elizabeth has Conless
-
Where and when was daughter Elizabeth born?
-
Birth reg Sep 1879 West Derby & Toxteth Park district - 1881 census shows Liverpool
Under spelling of Hesketh
-
Thanks.
-
I believe on census records it stated that she was born in Liverpool.
Her father was said to be an engineer :)
-
Checked the other children and all born West Derby mothers name Conless
-
This is the long shot I have…although it’s anything but air tight :)
On her marriage certificate, the witnesses where JOHN MCDONAGH and WINNIFRED EGAN.
In 1881…there was a JOHN CUNLESS born LIVERPOOL ( 1857) along with a JOHN MCDONOUGH…both are said to be boarders and living a 75 STANLEY ROAD
Stanley Road is where SARAH lived with her HESKETH husband.
JOHN CUNLESS was a similar age, living in a similar area with the same surname…could be a coincidence but maybe it isn’t?
On the 1901 census SARAH had the initial SARAH A…let’s say that was ANN.
There’s a SARAH A CUNLERK born in LIVERPOOL to THOMAS and SUSAN in 1856…
There’s also a JOHN CUNLICK born 1854 to a THOMAS and SUSANNA
If you’re able to see the original photos it’s hard to tell if the letter ‘R’ isn’t actually an ‘s’…meaning the surname was possibly ‘CUNLISK/CONLISK’?
There’s a Thomas Conlisk that passed away in Liverpool also….
That’s the best ‘ lead’ that I’ve been able to find

For the back burner at present.
CORLESS, THOMAS HATTON

Something to look into further for sure. Can you find John later on or a marriage for him?
Sarah had a daughter named Susan? If I remember right.
Also did James Hesketh remarry after Sarah died? Where was he and the children in 1911 if you know? **
** found it, he is a widower.

Yes, some of the children are as follows….
HESKETH, SARAH ELLEN mmn CONLESS
GRO Reference: 1881 Sept Quarter in WEST DERBY Volume 08B Page 442
HESKETH, EDITH AMY mmn CONLESS
GRO Reference: 1883 Sept Quarter in WEST DERBY Volume 08B Page 382
HESKETH, SUSAN mmn CONLESS
GRO Reference: 1888 March Quarter in WEST DERBY Volume 08B Page 500
HESKETH, WILLIAM JAMES mmn CONLESS

HESKETH, THOMAS mmn CONLESS

HESKETH, HELENA mmn CONLESS
GRO Reference: 1894 Dec Quarter in WEST DERBY Volume 08B Page 398
I’m not sure where James was in 1911…
There was a couple of things suggesting he remarried but again, I couldn’t clarify it! Simply because there was so many JAMES HESKETHS in Liverpool at that time…
I was hoping CONLESS was going to be easier to narrow down
-
No he is still a widower on census with some children.
1911 he is with Edith, Thomas, Lena. Still at Stanley Road. Plus various grandchildren.
-
Is the Cunliffe name too far off, if you speak it rather than write it, double f and double s sound similar.
There is a widowed Susan Cunliffe 38 in 1861 with 3 children
William 10
John 6
Sarah Ann 4
Susan and William born Scotland
-
On Sarah’s death certificate her address was said to be
205 ARLINGTON STREET…
I don’t know if that’s just where she was or if it meant that she’d left STANLEY STREET by that point?

Now hang on….
That’s interesting to me bcos I recall finding a THOMAS and SUSANNAH CONLISK in Glasgow in an earlier census….perhaps it’s the same people?
It’s funny that you say about pronunciation bcos I try and do the accents of misspellings to myself constantly lol
Where they in Liverpool?
-
That would be place of death in the left hand column?
Who was the informant on the death?
-
Yes the Cunliffe family were in Liverpool. Youngest 2 children born Liverpool but I imagine Cunliffe is a more common name.
If you can find your Scotland one again will see if anything matches up.
Susan was a charwoman.
-
The informant for Sarah’s death?
That was her daughter Elizabeth…at that time her surname was FORSTER which matches up with the 1911 census
Her address was 153 ARLINGTON STREET
-
Possible death for Susan Sep 1871 Liverpool age 48
Maybe 1871 - all 3 born Scotland this time
William Cunless 18 head
Susan Cunless 49 mother widow charwoman
John Cunless 16 brother
Mary Killen 67 lodger born Ireland
No Sarah but probably out on her own as a servant somewhere
Still the surname is getting closer!
-
Just running with this one till we can rule it out or otherwise
William Cunless 28 is a lodger born Lanarkshire in 1881 - William Conless death in 1890 age 37
John leads me to the boarder in Stanley Road you mentioned earlier
-
It won’t let me upload the photo of that death certificate bcos it’s too large…I’m not sure how you downsize them?
It says…
Susan Cunliffe
July 17th 1871
14 Woodstock Street
Widow Thom Cunliffe ( Labourer )
William Cunliffe present at death
-
In 1881 there is a WILLIAM CUNLESS
Age 28 born Glasgow 1953.
Living in Bury, Lancashire.
He was a velvet cotton dryer and single.
He was a lodger
John Evans “ head “ Ireland
Mary Evans “ Ireland
William Evans “ Bury, Lancs
Esther Ann Evans “ Ireland
Patrick Holan “ Ireland
Thomas Buckley “ Bury, Lancs
William Cunless “ Glasgow, Scotland
-
Certainly looking hopeful isn’t it. Susan widow of Thom as well.
I wonder if we could narrow down a birth for Sarah. There was one with mother’s name Hughes in Liverpool I believe.
How about Scottish records for parents marriage and birth of older siblings?
Can you find the Scottish census you mentioned with Thomas & Susannah Conlisk to compare with what else we’ve found?
-
Thomas Conlisk death in Liverpool in 1857 age 40
Burial 18 October
There is a Thomas Conlisk marriage 6 Nov 1842 to Sussanna Boyle in Lanark but no idea if this is the same person or indeed the right person
-
Thomas Conlisk death in Liverpool in 1857 age 40
Burial 18 October
I had purchased this death certificate a few days ago…
It reads…
Oct 11th 1857
Royal infirmary Brownlow Street
Thomas Conlisk 40
Labourer
Edward Morris ( Surgeon ) witness
Royal Infirmary Liverpool
-
Oh not much to verify from that is there :-\
-
The family I found in Scotland was a Thomas Conlisk and Susanna Boyle…
They had some children, one of which was called Sarah…but it says she was born in 1865…I’m looking for a birth of around 1858
The only one I can see that kinda matches up would be Sarah Ann Cunlerk…born in Liverpool to Thomas and Susanna
-
Can you find a birth registration under that surname?
-
There’s two separate records on familysearch…
A christening and a baptism it seems?
Both on December 14th 1856
Parents Thomas and Susan
The same couple possibly had a son named John…surname spelled Cunlick in 1854 Liverpool. Again this is on familysearch :)
-
Sarah when married is consistent with birth year of 1858/9 on census.
-

Death cert reads…

48 years
Widow of Thomas Cunliffe (Labourer)
William Cunliffe present at death

While reading a census for a separate family, I happened to see…
3 SHERIFF STREET
JOHN CUNLIFFE
29 SINGLE
FREIGHT CLERK
WILLIAM CUNLIFFE
21 SINGLE
JOINER
Apparently both born LIVERPOOL
Boarders in the house of
HUGHE LYNES
31
CORN PORTER
IRELAND
And his family Margaret, Ada and Florence
Plus another boarder THOMAS SASKEY
