Title: Elizabeth Gill - Portesham
Post by: chemorga on Wednesday 23 July 25 03:21 BST (UK)
Greetings! I am looking for an Elizabeth Gill who was born around 1802. Two of her later census records show her being from Portesham and one says Huish. I can't find her in the Portesham records, and I don't see any records for a town names Huish. She married Thomas Churchill in 1826 in Winterborne Monkton. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to RootsChat.

Just a possibility - there is a Elizabeth GILL baptised 29 May 1803 at Litton Cheney, parents John and Anne. Litton Cheney is some 7 miles from Portsesham.  :-\

Also a Elizabeth GILL baptised 25 Jan 1801 at Upwey, parents Robert and Ann. Upwey is about 5 miles from Portesham.

I note on the marriage, Elizabeth GILL is of "Holy Trinity Dorcester" [sic]. Thomas CHURCHILL signs, but Elizabeth by "mark". Witnesses are William CHURCHILL (by mark) and William TRAVESS.

Just for information but no record for Elizabeth there.

HUISH, a small scattered village on the west side of the Torridge valley, North Devon.

That seems a long way off.

OR ..?
Huish is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Wilcot, Huish and Oare, in Wiltshire, England, 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Pewsey and 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Marlborough.

The marriage banns has Elizabeth's Parish as Dorchester.

It certainly is.

Portisham, Dorset is 68 miles E of Huish, Devon.

It looks likely that Elizabeth's death was 1886 (age 85), registered Dorchester.

I do not see any baptisms for the children of  Thomas & Elizabeth but on census returns they had (1841) Ann 14, Mary 10, George 7 (1851) George 17.

Have you found their birth/baptism records and were there any others?

In 1881 Elizabeth is with Mary & her husband Henry Bugler in Dorchester.

There are some GALE family baptisms in Portesham around the right time.

Hello
Maybe this is a conincidence but there is a Hannah Gill who married Sydenham Churchill 14.11.1858 at Fordington. Her parents are Charles Gill born 1808 and Ann Bartlett.
She is with them at Abbotsbury on the 1871 census .Her father Charles is also the son of a John and Ann Gill.
Could there be a connection there or is it just a small world?

Can someone please explain why the responses to my request were deleted? There was some very valuable information that I was looking forward to doing more research on, and now they are gone??

@maddys52 - Can you please share with me how and where you found this info? I've just started researching this branch, and the records I've found on Family Search aren't the originals. I'd really like to be able to find the original parish records if possible. Thank you!

Just found this Friar Wadden Huish and Corton Huish, both being  a hamlet of Portesham

There is also an advertisment for a new railway line in 1873 that has its route:
"A railway commencing in the parish of Upwey ... Upwey Elwen, Buckland Ripers, Broadwey, otherwise Broadway, Nottington Portesham, otherwise Portisham, East Huish, West Huish, East Shilvington, otherwise East Shilvinghampton, West Shilvington, otherwise West Shilvinghampton, Waddon, Fryars Wadden, Corfe Yate, otherwise Coryates, Corton, East Elwoth, West Elworth, and Abbotsbury, or some of them, all in the County of Dorset ..."

So "Huish" is most likely Hewish Hill on this 1886 map
https://maps.nls.uk/view/101447246#zoom=4.7&lat=2042&lon=4023&layers=BT

"Hewish Hill Cottages" and "East Hewish Dairy" being possible locations for Elizabeth GILL.

I would suggest that the baptism of Elizabeth GILL at Upwey 25 Jan 1801 is very likely then, Upway being very close to Hewish Hill.

Modified to add:
Looking at the image of the parish register, it has Robert and Ann GILL of "Friar Whaddon". Friar Waddon is just north of Hewish.
