Title: Eli Goerge Farley
Post by: Yorkshire_Lad on Sunday 20 July 25 19:34 BST (UK)
Eli was born was born in Wyke near Bradford West Yorkshire in the September Quarter of 1875 (9 6).
On the 6th of October 1900 he married after banns at Helme Parish Church at the age of 23 to Sarah Ellen Jacobs (Spinster) aged 22. However on the 27th of December 1910 Sarah Ellen marries again as Sarah Ellen Jacobs (Spinster) aged 33 to George Brown. Between the two marriages I have up to this point found no further mention of Eli. It wasn't until I found a Eli George Farley's death registered in Bury St Edmonds (4b 1071) in 1954 at the age of 78 which matched with his birth year bar 12 months or so.

If anyone can throw any light on Eli's life between his first marriage and his demise in 1954 I would be most grateful.

Have you looked for him on the 1939 register?

£3 digital death image could well shed some light.

I don’t have a subscription to view this but it’s a newspaper item from 1907 about Eli.  Huddersfield Examiner & West Riding Reporter.  Header is Law & Justice

I can only access the OCR text, but it appears to be a case of customer v contractor regarding a concrete floor that was put in a building that was being refurbished. Eli was a briefly quoted witness who had been a concrete labourer for over 30 years.

So at a guess your Eli's father

It might be worth checking whether this really was his first marriage - which would mean the 1900 marriage might not be valid (and wuld explain the remarriage under her maiden name)

There's a marriage of an Eli Farley in Q4 1896, Ashton under Lyne which looks intriguing

The 1896 marriage was the second one for the bride.  Amelia Jane Hale/Sherman.  It was a civil marriage so can't be looked up

The 1911 census entry for George Brown & Sarah Ellen shows two children, Edith Annie b. 1904 & John Edward b. 1906.

Both children were registered as Brown, with mother's maiden name as Jacobs.

Presumably Eli & Sarah Ellen had separated before 1904.

Emma Frost  32  b Plymouth
Albert Henry Frost  2  son  b Willenhall, Staffs
Rosa Hannah Frost    10/12    Daughter  b Whitworth, Lancs

1881 Ashton under Lyne

Thank you one and all, but it’s the time between 1910 and his demise.

The only official records available for that time are the 1921 census & the 1939 register plus the marriage index.

A good starting point would be as suggested by Softly - download a digital image of his death cert for £3.

Death certs vary in usefulness but possibilities are the name of the person who reported his death  & their relationship.  His address & occupation.  Married/widower etc.
