My 4xgreat-grandparents are William Flinders and Elizabeth Wright. William was born 1768 in Nottingham and they married in 1790 also in Nottingham. My problem is I am unable to work out which, of the many, Elizabeth Wrights born around 1770 ish actually married William.
Therefore I'm asking if anyone more familiar with Nottingham research can point me in the right direction please.
I have come across some trees on various sites that seem keen to attach Elizabeth to Thomas Wright and Mary Smith, Thomas son of Ichabod Wright and Elizabeth Wildbore. Although it would be nice to have a famous family in my tree I do need to get it right.
Cheers

Hi, Did Elizabeth die in 1847 aged 77. That would indicate a dob c 1771. 1841 census records age as 70. I know that ages were meant to be rounded up/down in 1841 bur entries on this particular census are not, so this suggests again a birth c 1771. 1841 suggests she was born in county
Most of the trees on various sites intimate a dob c 1764--I would steer clear of these.
Sadly there are approx 55 baptisms +/- 2 years 1771 for Elizabeth Wrights in Notts, if she came from there. :)

Hi.
The peerage online gives the family as.
Thomas Wright. A banker living Mapperley Hall. Wife Mary Smith married 1764.
Issue. John Smith Wright - became a JP and High Sheriff of Nottingham.I
Mary Neville Wright d 1784
Harriet Wright d 1815 married D'Ewes Coke in 1797
Elizabeth Wright d 1789
Ichabod Wright 1767-1862 married Harriett Day
Thomas Wright b 1773 married Sophia Chaplin JP and again a High Sherriff of Nottingham.
So they have Elizabeths death covered.

There are 7 baptisms for an Elizabeth Wright in Nottingham, St Mary ( marriage Church) 1790 +- 5 years. Which narrows it down considerably if she stayed within the same Church area. Of course no proof she did this! What are the names of her children? As often the names of the grandparents were used.

In the area are these births to William and Elizabeth Flinders.
Edward 1790
George 1792
Mary A 1794-1796
William 1796-1800 16 November
John 1799-1800 30 November
Eliza 1805-1806
Henry 1807
Alfred 1809 seems to marry in France.
A tree also assigns a Benjamin b 1803 BUT he marries in 1842 and gives father as Thomas a lace maker.
Henry seems to marry in Wiltshire returning to Notts later, he lists father as William a lace maker on marriage in 1842.

The Notts FHS cd has the above baptisms PLUS
another William bapt Oct 1801
Benjamin (Xmas day 1803)
both at NOtts St Mary.
The 1796 burial for Mary Flinders states that she was the WIFE of William
but there's a burial 29.1.1809 who was the DAUGHTER of William (but nb this is Mary, not Mary Ann, so could have belonged to a different family).

The only baptism in the county in 1768 pof a William Flinders that I can see is this one:
1768 09 13 William father Samuel FLINDERS mother Ann SNEINTON St Stephen
so not actually in Nottingham. Is this the right one? Neither parent's name was used for the baptisms of William and Elizabeth's children :-\
-
Well found Annie that fills a gap between births.
The tree I found follows Benjamin that married in 1842 to Mary Taylor but he has father as Thomas on marriage cert.
I cannot see anymore into for the one you found.
William b 1801, married Elizabeth Chamberlain.

Thanks for all your replies.
William Flinders was born and baptised in Sneinton in 1768 and died there in 1850. It seems he spent his whole life there except to get married at St Mary's Nottingham.
Elizabeth Wright died in Sneinton in 1847.
They had ten kids:
Edward 1790-1856
George 1792-1838 (my ancestor)
Mary Ann 1794-1809
William 1796-1800
John 1799-1800
William 1801-1880
Benjamin 1803-1814
Elizabeth 1805-1806
Henry 1807-1877 (Henry married three times the first to Anne Hyde Parrot about whom I know nothing then twice in Lyon)
Alfred 1809-1881 (Alfred and Henry, both lace makers like their father, migrated to Lyon and Alfred married once).
Looking at the Thomas Wright and Mary Smith family I found the following baptisms carried out at the Castle Gate Independent Chapel:
Ichabod 1767
Elizabeth 1769
John 1770
Harriett 1771
Elizabeth 1772 (this is the Elizabeth who could have married William Flinders - but I have my doubts. On the marriage register for William and Elizabeth in 1790 he has a lovely signature and Elizabeth had a mark. I'm thinking that if she was from that prominent family she would most likely have been literate)
John Smith & Thomas (twins) 1773
George 1775
Not sure where that leaves me in my quest but thanks anyway for all your input

I had a look at the will of Thomas Wright the banker and when he made it in 1790 he only had four surviving children: Ichabod, Harriett, John Smith and Thomas. That then eliminates his second Elizabeth (b1772) as William Flinders wife.
Back to the original question, who was Elizabeth Wright?
-
So if William spent his life in Sneinton, only using St Mary's in Notts to get married in, perhaps St Mary's was Elizabeth's parish.
Maybe you need to start with the list if Elizabeth Wright baptisms at St Mary (as posted by Larkspur previously) and see if you can definitely rule out any of those.
-
There's also Elizabeth Wright baptised 9 September 1770 at St Peter's Nottingham :-\
Parents Edward and Elizabeth.
Father a Butcher.

At least it gives a potential match age wise, and Edward was the name of the first Flinders son.

Elizabeth died 27 December 1847.
Death announcements.
Nottingham Journal, Friday 7 January 1848
At Old Sneinton, on Monday week, Elizabeth, wife of Mr. Wm. Flinders, in her 78th year.
Nottingham Review, same day
At Old Snenton, on the 27th ult., in her 78th year, Elizabeth, wife of Mr. Wm. Flinders
Burial at Sneinton, 3 January 1848
Elizabeth Flinders
Abode Dale Street
Age 77 years
The death registration mentioned
FLINDERS, ELIZABETH
Age at Death (in years): 77
GRO Reference: 1848 M Quarter in RADFORD UNION Volume 15 Page 555
So all those agree. Elizabeth was 77 years old when she died, and in her 78th year.
If accurate, it puts her birth in the year 1770.

Larkspur has already given a list of possible baptisms for Elizabeth Wright in Notts, I've extended it by looking at all churches and chapels in the town, 1765-75; this gives a total of 8.
1767 02 03 Elisabeth John WRIGHT Kezia NOTTINGHAM St Mary (one other child, William)
1768 06 23 Dau Elizabeth Thomas WRIGHT Mary NOTTINGHAM Castle Gate, Independent (already ruled out)
1768 11 21 Elisabeth William WRIGHT Martha NOTTINGHAM St Mary (several other baptisms but with names that aren't reused eg Lydia, Anthony, Lucy)
1770 08 18 Elizabeth John WRIGHT Jane NOTTINGHAM St Mary (buried 22 Aug 1770)
1770 09 09 Elizabeth Edward WRIGHT Eliz'th NOTTINGHAM St Peter (Edward was a butcher. Oldest child, Mary, bapt at independent chapel; 3 more children at St Peter - Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Edward)
1772 08 03 Elizabeth Charles WRIGHT Elizabeth NOTTINGHAM St Mary (again, many less common names in this family - Robert, Charlotte, Cornelius, Molly)
1772 08 21 Dau Elizabeth Thoms. WRIGHT Mary NOTTINGHAM Castle Gate, Independent (already ruled out)
1774 01 27 Elizabeth Anthony WRIGHT Elizabeth NOTTINGHAM St Mary (The oldest of 5 children to this couple; Elizabeth,Mary, Anthony, Ann, Mary)
1774 11 22 Elizabeth Thomas WRIGHT Susanna NOTTINGHAM St Mary (9 baptisms in total, all commonly used names)
1775 03 20 Elizabeth William WRIGHT Elizabeth NOTTINGHAM St Mary (8 baptisms - Henry, Mary, Elizabeth x2, James, William, John x2)
jonwarrn has posted whilst I was typing; if 1770 is correct then Edward and Elizabeth look like the parents. Any wills available for Edward?

William Flinders and Elizabeth Wright. William was born 1768 in Nottingham and they married in 1790 also in Nottingham.
The marriage at St. Mary was on 23 July 1790
Bare bones from the Phillimore transcript

By Banns.
William was of the Parish of Sneinton, Elizabeth of St. Mary
As said, William signed and Elizabeth marked.
Witneses - looks like Samuel Flinders, and the other one was Robert Kirkby, who may have been a regular (or semi-regular) witness.
Baptism of son Edward was five months later, on 15 December 1790 at St. Mary
https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/684ebaa6865574398bc85d05
If Edward died in 1856, then he was buried at Sneinton, 9 December, age 66.

If them it would have left daughter Elizabeth orphaned at a young age :(

Another possible link to Edward being the father of Elizabeth - if so, Elizabeth had a brother, Nathaniel. A less common name makes him easier to follow.
It looks as though he married Mary Wright in Nott St Mary in 1789. There are baptisms for Nathaniel and Mary as parents at St Mary regularly through to 1815; one has, as his firts name, the maiden name of Nathaniel's mother so I think that is further proof that this is Edward and Elizabeth Wright's son.
The suggestions that point further towards the possibility of Nathaniel being Elizabeth Flinders/Wright's brother are
1. His children's names - similar to William and Elizabeth Wright, viz. Mary, Sarah, Edward, George, Fillingham Nathaniel (that's the surname!), Nathaniel, John, Thomas, Bartholomew, Eliza, William, Edwin, Alfred. I've put in bold the ones that are match William and Elizabeth's family (though of course we must remember that a few names were used very comonly indeed so almost every family had a John or a William or an Elizabeth!)
2. Burial at St Mary for in 1825 for Nathaniel Wright, age 56 (the right age);abode Sneinton. Was he living with/near his sister?

The will of Edward Wright is available on Ancestry; this one was a maltster and leaves bequests to his daughters Mary Peake and Elizabeth Brown. So probably not this Edward, his children were far too young to be married by 1777.
-
OK, that's good news for the young Elizabeth.
Speaking of Nathaniel..
There is a will of Nathaniel Fillingham, Victualler of Nottingham, proved 1769. Appears to be the father of the Elizabeth Wright we are interested in, wife of Edward, with the son Nathaniel (who had son Fillingham Nathaniel!)

Sadly he dies before the target Elizabeth Wright is even born, never mind before any potnetial marriages, so it doesn't give any clues about his further descendants. But it will certainly be a useful resource if this does turn out to be the right family!

I can't find Benjamin on any marriage records or censuses. I wonder if this burial is his:

Thank you everybody who has posted since I last looked. I will take it all in and try to figure it out and get back.

I'm starting to think that Elizabeth Wright (b1770), the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth is in fact my Elizabeth.
With reference to the marriage register of William Flinders and Elizabeth Wright, William had a younger brother Samuel who could be the witness mentioned by jonwarrn. Also William and Elizabeths first born in 1790 did indeed die in 1856, their son Benjamin die in 1814.
