Title: Brickwall with Margaret Brook(e)s from Whitchurch
Post by: Aquitaine on Saturday 19 July 25 18:51 BST (UK)
Hi everyone

I have had alot of good help recently and thanks to all.  Looking for the Eureka moment with this family!

Just checking on my brickwalls!  I dont have much on this family I have Margaret Brook(e)s in 1851 Bury Lancashire and she married James Cooper  I have her death etc..the problem is her earlier life.
I know her father was Thomas from the marriage in Bury and I know she had a sister Jane Brook(e)s also in Bury 1851 she married Frederick Wilkinson St Mary Bury Lancashire 10th September 1851

I know her father was a cordwainer or shoemaker.  On census both always state born "Whitchurch Shropshire" but I cant seem to find anything for certain back there or a Thomas B. who was a shoemaker..

Margaret born abt 1839-1832
Jane born abt 1830 roughly

Anyone any clues?

Thanks in advance.

A.

In 1861 Margaret & James are living with sister Ann & her husband.

Also in the same house is a nephew Henry J Brookes b Manchester whose father appears to be Ambrose according to other docs.  Ambrose was b Shropshire so is presumably the brother of Margaret & Ann

Good evening

Wow - now why couldnt I find them!  I am happy with the 1841 Whitchurch with Mary and children showing siblings.  I was looking just around Whitchurch. The unusual name "Ambrose" has helped to open up this family.  So they were quite aways from Whitchurch. I had to look Kinlet up on maps.

Oh yes I downloaded the death for Thomas Brookes in 1840 per your suggestions and it is indeed the one.  Death certificate Cleobury Mortimer reg district

5 October 1840 Kinlet Thomas Brookes 47 yrs a shoemaker died spasm - wife Mary present at the death.

So a big thanks

Hello all

My you are all up early today and researching!  Thanks again I have looked at the original entries and built a much bigger family group sheet now, with all the children. I am happy with the tree now. Thank you for your time and interest.

it's odd we cannot find baptisms for either Jane, Margaret or Ambrose and we only have the burial for Thomas.

So could they have moved between William 1827 and Ann 1835 possibly into another county? I'm not familiar with the area.

Yes I know no baptism for Margaret Jane or Ambrose and there are so many more children that I didnt know about. What has mislead me abit is stating born Whitchurch (Margaret and Jane)so I concentrated there. I cannot find Mary Brook(e)s in 1851 in Whitchurch either widow of Thomas Brook(e)s. Thank you to all your efforts.

A little off the subject, curiosity I'm afraid.

Ambrose married Mary Heys Withington 1849, their son Henry James Brookes was raised by his sister Margaret who married James Cooper.

Did Mary die or did they separate? Ambrose married 1863 Mary J Dixon Sunderland (1871 census) and in 1878 Sarah J Bertram nee Fairley in Sunderland. They had a daughter Louisa - Sept .quarter 1879 reg. Houghton Le Spring.
I cannot see the original marriages 1863 or 1878 to see if he said he was a widower.

The last child I can find was born 1855. He says he's married in 1861, but that's when he's a lodger so that info might not be correct

I had exactly same issues/feelings. I'm not totally convinced that the Ambrose Brookes/Brooks "Up North" is the same man who married Mary Heys Withington.

Marriage 12th june 1847 Shropshire(image on FindMyPast) Ambrose Brookes(occupation Mason), full age married Ann Howell.  His father Ambrose Brookes occupation Painter. I cannot trace this couple after that date or any possible Brookes/Howell children. So is it Ambrose who married Ann Howell living and marrying "up north"

Still searching.

I found the marriage on ancestry as mentioned at Eccles Lancashire and Ambrose Brookes is listed as a stone mason and his father is noted as Thomas Brookes - cordwainer.

I did find a baptism about 1820 on ancestry for a Baptist baptism in Shropshire it wasnt clear any parents listed.

I am inquisitive myself!
