Hello - I am interested in learning how would people travelled from Mittelheim to their ship in Hamburg in 1854 - they were vinedressers who were going to New South Wales in Australia.
Are there records online of any passport applications they would have completed for the journey and were there any requirements for these people undertaking this journey.
Lastly what route would the ships have sailed from Hamburg to Sydney New South Wales, Australia?
thank you for your assistance.
Regards
Suze

Trove - OZ newspapers 1854
Doesn't answer your specific questions (other than Melbourne was en route) but gives an idea of length of journey etc

Do you know the name of the ship?. If so, check it's arrival on Trove.
I'm checking Hamburg departures.
Have you checked FamilySearch?

Hi hanes teulu and tonepad - Thank you for your replies. I have checked both trove and familysearch and assisted immigration records in NSW. None provide details on how they made the journey from their home to the port of Hamburg.
the record that someone indicated was a passport must have been personal details provided before the voyage.

Your post appears to ask for more than just travel from Mittelheim to Hamburg?

Hi hanes teulu - thank you for the the image you have posted - it looks like and advertisement in a newspaper or a shipping schedule in said newspaper - my German is not good as I rely on google translate or my handy dictionary!
I have ancestors who migrated to NSW Australia aboard the Caesar that left Hamburg on 11 November 1854 and arrived Sydney 27 March 1855.
As they lived in Mittelheim I was interested in how they would have made the journey from their town to the port of Hamburg - could they have travelled overland in coaches or via railway or taken boats via the river system or a combination of river and land travel. Also would they have had to pay their own travel expenses to the port? It is quite a distance between the two areas!
I would love to find an advertisement or shipping notice for the Caesar like the one you posted - would you know where I could access this information?
Many thanks
Cheers

Newspaper Ad -
Passengers and Emigrants for Australia - the Meteor will be sailing direct from Hamburg for Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide on 15 April. What I hadn't established with certainty was whether it went via Cape Horn or Cape of Good Hope - I think the latter.

There was an extensive canal & river system in Germany in the 1800s.
The Rhine, Elbe, Ems and other waterways.

There were no rail routes going north from the Frankfurt area, due to objections from the Prussian Military.
Mittheim itself if on the Rhine, so it would make sense to at least start the journey by canal.
Through Koblenz, Bonn, Koln, Dusseldorf, Duisberg.
