Title: Finding a couple
Post by: *sara* on Wednesday 16 July 25 11:28 BST (UK)
Hi
My grandparents got married in Italy in 1944 .... When they were serving in the war
I have their certificate... But I can't find their marriage online.
(Dorothy Tompkins and William overend)
Anyway, I have photos of their wedding and another couple got married on the same day..... I have photos of this couple.... How can I find out who they are? Is this possible?
I'd love to give these photos to their descendants

The marriage is indexed in the Army marriage returns

Thankyou....

Any idea is it possible to find the other couple?

Who were the witnesses on your grandparents wedding? It’s possible it was the other couple, often when two couples married one after the other they witnessed each other’s marriages, so see if you can find the marriage for them.

Jebber's suggestion is a good one.

I haven't found a way of searching the armed forces and consular returns on FindMyPast by page number but you can search by year (1945) and Location (Italy). It give 2,328 results. You could then trawl through looking for ones that just say Italy, not Venice or Bologna or wherever.  That narrows things down.  You'd be looking for page 1492, or possibly 1491 or 1493.

But let's try Jebber's suggestion first.

Here is Dorothy's entry

If you use ShaunJ's method on FindMyPast and specify the Place  as Italy, the number of results reduces to 551 which is a slightly more manageable number.

This is a 'possible' based on what ShaunJ says (there may be others)
1945, Italy, p1491. George W Wells  & Elsie D Dawson

You can order a certificate from the GRO

Choose the option "Outside the United Kingdom and registered by the British Forces, Consul or High Commission"
