Better start saving for the aircon LM!

Survived this heatwave quite well - curtains drawn in day on whichever side of the house the sun is on. Busy day yesterday - got up a ladder and bashed some lead flashing that I'd noticed was moving, used the softening heat to help me! Not bad at my age! Almost Viktoria standard. Also emptied with trowel a heavy concrete planter, completely. All the lavender I'd put in that one died, it's twin flourished - so I wasted to know why! (Poor drainage, I suspect, one of the small pieces of stone beneath it to space it up from an uneven floor may have blocked drainage holes)
Even managed to do some weed-hacking in the blissful shade between the back of our big, solidly built shed, and overgrowth from neighbouring garden's hidden area they don't venture near!
Good day, eh? And I HATE heat, and somehow got all that done before splatting out on swing seat, under canopy, with cool ( non-alcoholic) drink!
No idea why I had such an outburst of activity. Amazed I did!

Well done T.Y.
I have just blitzed as far as is possible my son’s bedroom / office.
I do my very best to not move what is obviously work ,nor to see it really .
Not my business , but managed a good “ bottoming” as my mother would say .ThanksL.M.
I don’t do such s lot really ,my house is small. All newly done when the last owner had damaged it badly so a really big refurbishment .
It is easy to run, and unlike my previous Victorian monster not on a busy road so the dust is white here - quite dirty in my previous house.
Curtains etc stay clean and the washing water is not dirty but previously that was grey.
I could not manage a ten roomed house on a busy road now .

I think I do more talking than working!
I have two bedrooms,a tiny landing and bathroom.
A lounge, kitchen diner and utility room .Vestibule.
Previously four bedrooms, bathroom ,huge landing .stairs ,hall, vestibule .
Lounge,dining room and kitchen.
I loved that house but could not manage it now especially as the busy road is twice as bad,Here it is s quiet side road.

Quite a bit of rain but not really cold ,it was needed.

Just ordered some books from “Postscript” ,some for my sister and some for the children ,a few real bargains .
Got to go to a very big Tesco to exchange a top I bought online .I asked for 8-10, well it might fit Kyra!
That is the easiest way ,our local smallish branch does not do refunds on things bought online.
Well nice cup of tea and a sandwich and the afternoon is mine .
Countdown in a little while .
Cheerio folks .
Viktoria.

P.S. Just seen the news re the Roman remains at Castlefield ,my Dad always talked about a Roman wall under a railway bridge over Liverpool Road .
Red sandstone .Quarried from“ Red Bank” on the fringe of the area described by Engels as “ The worst slum in zEurope”
My daughter and I worked on the site at Castlefield.
Time was running out so volunteers were invited to join in - bring your own trowel!
It was very interesting ,I dug out a Samian ware bowl, well the pieces.

These new digs are so near the surface .
Interesting.
Viktoria.

Viktoria, I've just read your comment in last week's diary about duvet covers getting creased when putting them on,, you asked Why not side openings? I must admit to being rather puzzled by the question, I can't think how it would make any difference! Please explain to me!  :D

I like the Sewing Bee too LM, will watch it another night.

Duvet covers can certainly be a battle at times, I manage but iron doesn't make appearance  :) Still have a bedspread that was a wedding present, a bit too small for king and super-king size beds we've had for some years although I haven't pulled it out of storage to see how it looks!

Lovely time with grandchildren staying last week and they're back home now for the new school term.
Also arrival of great-great-nephew at the weekend, a little tardy in his arrival and then distressed and needed caesarean birth and oxygen and transfer to bigger hospital but mum and baby doing well and happy. If he had arrived the day before, all three of my sisters would have had grandchildren/great grandchildren born on the same date/month but apparently he preferred to coincide with a relative on his great grandfathers side  :D

Lovely morning tea gathering yesterday to celebrate a 99 year old local, she's doing and looking very well and lives with her daughter but does have occasional TIA episodes and sometimes says she wants to join her late husband.

Better attend to dinner as it'll be late for my husband  :P A roast in oven, so pretty straight forward, just some greens now to put on including a beautiful big head of fresh brocolli  :)

Have a good week all ...

Viktoria, funnily enough many decades back, when I was a student, spent some time working on a Roman dig in Manchester, quite interesting to do.

Well as the width is less than the length I feel you could lay the cover on the bed and get the duvet in sideways as much easier in a bigger opening .
You can reach deeper in to the corners with the shorter measurement.
I believe some covers are like that.
I can reach much further in when using home made  side opening covers made to match curtains I have also made.
Much less creasing which is a bonus after having ironed them.
When I consider the bed making with numerous blankets etc I tell myself off when losing my temper  with duvet covers!

I need a telling off then Viktoria,  duvets annoy me but I only have one in the spare room, there must be an art in it I am sure, you wouldn't see chamber maids getting into a fight with  duvet.
I am having a fight with my computer  printer at the moment, for years I could cut and paste and do all sorts of things from a computer programme, now it doesn't  work so I  have made myself look sillier than usual by volunteering  to do posters, grrrr!.

Well, a blitz on two of my wardrobes.
I have been really ruthless and now have 46,yes 46 empty hangers .The
clothes much too big for me , just hope I don’t gain weight.
Another two to go but they are more outdoor clothes , I hate getting rid of good clothes but most of those are also far too big ,well only an 8-10 now.

A cooler day here heavy , rain in the night  so the gardens will be happy .

Well ,time for bed  but but a quick bedroom tidy , a few clothes needing to be put away .
I will finish my enjoyable book no doubt tonight .

Hope all have a good restful night.
Viktoria.

My daughter's university boyfriend came from Finland and his duvet covers had, I think, been made by his mother.  She had put gaps in the side seams part way down the cover so that you could put your hands in and pull the duvet through.  It worked really well.  I hate putting covers on duvets and have duvets only on our guest beds, so am quite happy with our sheets and light blankets.  There's a certain amount of satisfaction in making hospital corners with your sheets and blankets, as we were taught at boarding school.  If you didn't do them correctly you had to pull the bedding apart and start again from scratch.  We soon learned!

It's cooler today with a very light sprinkle of rain from time to time.  Our first potatoes were dug up yesterday.  Mmm! Rather better than those tasteless but expensive Jersey potatoes. The outdoor tomatoes are almost ready and I can see that they are all going to ripen at the same time.  ::)  French beans are looking good and the onions have now been lifted and are drying ready for storage.  I wish I know how to make those strings of onions like the French onion sellers used to bring on their bikes.  Do they still do that or is it yet another thing that Brexit has knocked on the head?

I had a blitz on my shirts!
I rarely wear long-sleeved shirts these days, and some of my short-sleeved shirts haven;t been worn for years!
After a trip to the local Hospice Shop, I counted 34 empty hangers!

Some no longer fitted - shrunk in the wardrobe! ;D
Many I didn't like any more.
I think 3 went in the bin! Due to discolouration of collars, worn cuffs, etc.

Not sure if this helps with the duvet problem but this is how I do it :
Turn the cover inside out (before ironing!). Reach down to the bottom corners of the cover and grasp the corners of the duvet through the cover. Lift the duvet and shake the cover down, then put it on the bed to pull it down if necessary and straighten. You don't need to be tall to do this, I'm quite petite!

It is so hot I lack energy

Have been to a local shopping  centre to distribute  fliers  for our forthcoming  fete, will accept a poster towards the back of the shop, not on a front window,  I then asked the fruit and veg stall and a shop to donate, neither would, times are hard, came home foot sore a disappointed , I stood and chatted, gave them all the information,  they showed interest but not enough to make even a small donation.
Our church is a local  village church, struggling, almost 1000 years old and needs repairs, if the church closes through lack of support there will be outrage,  but it can't be down to the small congregation,  just not possible.

There is a society “ Save our churches “ ,what a pity it has come to this.
The church where my husband’s family worshipped was a wonderful building .
There was a lot of wrought iron which was lovely but was in fact vital supporting structures.
Deconsecrated  and now a BBC recording studio .
Similarly St, John the Evangelist ,my mother’s family’ church .
A gallery and beautiful scraffito, in the plaster . There hung a little Sanctuary lamp on a chain that would lower it for filling etc ,and a grant for the, oil as it burned perpetually .It was in memory of my grandmother.
I read in the local newspaper the church was being demolished .
I tried to contract the demolishes working for Manchester City Council as I did not want it smashed or perhaps “ rescued “ by the demolishers ,it was really our family’s property .Sadly without any success. This was 1980
Grandma died in 1931.
I get a bit sad when our church is used for baptisms, weddings and funerals and November 11 th.by people who never come at any other time .
It costs a lot to heat and maintain it by a decreasing number of oeople ,but we always give a warm welcome .
Often during the service people from outside will enter, go to the toilet and walk out again . So we are also a free public toilet!
But how do they think it is maintained.

Back in the 1800’s it was enlarged ,by the local,Ashton family (  Ashton’s Zorbit nappies)!  for their employees, including orphans from Manchester ,all of six years old - who would work a twelve hour day before the six hour act came into being  after which they did get some schooling .
So they needed to build a church as “ fire insurance” ie perhaps to avert their descent to a very warm place ! Also so the employees would “ know their place “ and accept the huge disparity as they were expected to attend church every Sunday.” The rich man in his castle ,the poor man at his gate”——
I have been reading Engels again — but we did that period in history at school .
So sadly many of our churches are doomed , impossible to maintain with ever dwindling congregations .

Well this is not getting on ,you lot do delay and distract me from washing cleaning  etcetc , but I am very willing to be distracted!
Viktoria.

Does your church a "Friends' Scheme"?

https://www.churchofengland.org/sites/default/files/2023-08/friends-scheme-for-a-parish-church-2019-edit-1_0.pdf

It's a way to gather support from the community to support what is probably the oldest building in the locality.  You don't have to be religious to appreciate a church's historical importance.
