Dear Listers
I'm trying to fill in some gaps regarding a late ancestor William Oliver who lived in Cawsand.
Born 11/09/1805 married Mary Dunstone 9/8/1831 and died 18.9.1882.
He worked as a fisherman and pilotsman in Cawsand and looking at census records between 1841-1861 he is either at sea or somewhere else.
I'm trying to find out more about his life, his parents and why he was away so much - assume that a pilotsman was a tough job but do not know much about that either.
Any help or pointers very much appreciated

Thank you. I was told that William's arents were William and Elizabeth (Paul) Oliver but wasn't sure how to check this as it's before the census records began?

The next household entry in the 1841 census of Cawsand is another publican: Henry Chapell. In 1844 Pigots directory, Henry Chapell had the Pilot Boat pub.
Other inns & pubs listed in Cawsand in 1844 Pigots:
The Barley Sheaf - Richard Jope. he is a publican in Town Place in the 1841 census.
The Ship - Thomas Trist.
At first pass I don't see Thomas Trist in the 1841 census so it could be that William Oliver had the Ship at that time.

From GenUKI:
MAKER parish, which occupies a great part of the bold promontory and peninsula, which juts out into the English Channel on the west side of Plymouth Sound, and the south side of the harbour of Hamoaze, opposite Stonehouse and Devonport, is partly in Cornwall, and contains 2725 inhabitants and 2260 acres of land, of which 1156 souls and about 1320 acres are in VAULTERSHOME tithing, which is in Devonshire, and includes the beautiful seat of Mount Edgcumbe, the parish church, the village of Kingsand, and part of Millbrook.
Kingsand was still in Devon until 1844 and the boundary stone between the two counties is still opposite the Halfway Hotel, separating Turk Town (Cawsand) and the North Rockers (Kingsand). Intense rivalry between the two villages continued well into the 20th century.
