There might be reports in newspapers of a fire in the 80's.

Thanks, that was my next port of call

Here it is, south of Balerno on a large scale map (~1970s?) overlaid on a modern streetmap. Slide the slider at bottom left to reveal the modern map. On the current OS map the house there is labelled as Marchbank House and is right next door to the water treatment works.

BALERNO
Hotel fire under investigation
POLICE are investigating the cause of a fire which caused about £100,000 damage at a 200-year-old hotel under renovation near Balerno, Midlothian, late on Thursday night. The fire at the Marchbank Hotel, being redeveloped at a cost of £1 million by a Newcastle-based leisure group, destroyed upper floors and the attic.

The first newspaper references to “Marchbank Hotel” for Balerno date from 1938. On early OS maps it is labelled as Marchbank, and newspaper items indicate that there was a farm called Marchbank in the 19th century, associated with the name of Munro.

Thanks for this.
The Munro connection is interesting as Archibald, who was the owner of the Hotel in the 50's, had a sister who married a Munro.
Another branch to investigate :)
