I am trying to help an 82 yr old born in the above camp to obtain a birth certificate. Father Turkish but British (naturalised 1969) mother of Maltese background but therefore British were evacuated from Greece as the Nazis invaded, and transhipped to India, a refugee camp in Coimbatore. We have searched a number of websites - can't access the British library which appears to have information but not digitised ? we are in New Zealand. Where in UK would records be for the people in the camp?
Grateful for suggestions or help

Is it on British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms on FindMyPast?
-
FindMyPast has 98 birth records (mostly baptism transcripts) from Coimbatore in the 1941-194 period.
But note "In compliance with data protection laws fewer details and no images are available for births dating to after 1915. Full details are available to researchers who visit the British Library in person."

Thank you both for replies. I thought I'd looked at the Brit Armed Forces records but didn't find George there and am aware of the 100 yr cut off. I'll try again
Shaun thank you; need to go to the library to access FindMyPast. will do that tomorrow Saturday.
Thank you so much both of you
I am looking for George Ipsilos b May 1944 in Coimbatore refugee camp. While the family went eventually to UK about 1952-4? he has never had a proper birth cert. hence the search. He was later a Merchant seaman

Mmm would a researcher be able to access the real/actual document at the Brit Library?
I would have thought there would be records on Births Marriages Deaths even if they are restricted to the actual person or bonafide relative. We have searched so many websites and possibilities...

I can look on that FindMyPast data set for you if you don’t have access.
Oh yes please - would be very grateful; not sure the library edition would have all the info.
So George Ipsilos born 10th May 1944 Father Leonidas Ipsilos b Istanbul/Constantinople 1919; Mother Josephine Malvena (Caruana) 1925 Istanbul
Hope that helps.
Thanks so much

Hi Carol, nothing looking hopeful. Sorry.
And if there were as Shaun said earlier, it would have to be looked at at the British Library.
How did he get to NZ after 1969 without a passport? Ie what documents were accepted for one to be issued?
-
Parents were British so George would have had docs that proved his birth to them but he doesn't have the actual Brit birth certificate - that's his wish.

PS - He spent many years in UK from the age of 9... was a Merchant seaman so more recently in NZ. Would have had a passport.

Anything held by the British Library will be a transcript, not the real/actual document. Just email the Asia Pacific and Africa Collections team (APAC) at the BL, give them all the details of what you're looking for, and ask for advice. They will reply within 5 working days and are very helpful.

You need to remove his name from your reply #3 above - this contravenes RC policy because he is still living.

Generally a child takes his father’s nationality. Have you investigated the possibility that he was registered at birth as Turkish? You say his father didn’t become naturalised British until 1969 when the person concerned was already an adult of 26. It’s a complicated subject and regulations and conditions vary and have changed over time.

It’s on the right hand side of your post, next to ‘QUOTE’ only it’s called ‘MODIFY’ not edit.
