A Dictionary of Lowland Scotch, 1888 has this entry:
Birdalane or burdalane. A term of sorrowful endearment, applied to an only child, especially to a girl, to signify that she is without household comrades or companions.
And Newton Gordon, birdalane,
And Dalgetie both stout and keen.
—Scott's Minstrelsy.
The poem quoted below appeared in several newspapers in 1835. In The Literary Souvenir, and Cabinet of Modern Art, published in the same year (accessed at archive.org) it is attributed to Miss E. L. Montagu.
BIRDALANE.*
Nae kin have I, nae hame, nae gear,
Nae loving sire, nee mither dear,
Nae brither in my sports to share,
Nae sister fond to braid my hair;—
Ever my tears pour down amain,
An' aye they ca' me Birdalane!
I had a hame fu' braw an' fair,
A sister ance to braid my hair,
A mither dear to soothe my wae,
A brither young wi' me to play;—
I had a sire, that now hae nane,
An' aye they ca' me Birdalane!'
Ae morn I stood the sea beside,
I saw a ship come ower the tide;
That morn I tined them ane an' a'.
I mourn'd, an' gar'd the tear down fa;—
But wha for me shall mak the mane?
Oh, wha shall weep for Birdalane!
*Birdalane or Burdalane—the last survivor of a race—one who has outlived all ties.

Hi all
The info received has been good and answered nearly all of my queries
Just a couple of points to "Neale1961" can you clarify your info on the passenger to Mackay what is
occupation DS
English Hidd?
To "Trish 1120" where did you arrive at Birdalane being a Circus Rider (her mother and daughter also had the name Birdalane
Thank Manu
-
I'm sure Neale1961 will address your query soon, but in the meantime I will guess that DS is Domestic Servant and as for the word Hidd, I think it might be Midd as an abbreviation for Middlesex.
The column heading is County or Country.

The workhouse entries (on Ancestry) for Birdalane DEBROIT in 1884 give her occupation as "Circus Rider".
