Title: Sibyl Gordon Nichol nee Thompson after 1952
Post by: bikermickau on Thursday 10 July 25 00:52 BST (UK)
I haven't  been able to locate after 1952 any information on Sibyl Gordon Nichol nee Thompson when she arrived in Liverpool 18th July 1952 on the "Empress of Canada".

She had travelled several times, at least twice to Australia.

She was born 12 Mar 1893 Queensland, Australia to
Alexander McGregor Stuart Thompson and Ellen Jane Gordon

She married Julian Searcy Nichol on the 23 Jan 1919 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

1930, 1940, 1950 US Census she is at Davidson, Tennessee, United States.

Julian "Searcy" Nichol died September 14, 1963 in Nashville.
In his Obituary it states they are divorced.

All of her siblings died in Australia.

Just a long shot, thinking that "Sibyl Gordon" would be relatively unusual - there is a death notice for a Sibyl Gordon THOMAS, wife of Gordon THOMAS at Brighton on 11 Dec 1972
Wednesday,  Dec. 13, 1972
Publication: The Times

This death registration: Brighton (5h/392) According to FreeeBMD her date of birth was 20 Nov 1890.

Modified to strike through - not her, this Sybil Gordon THOMAS appears in the 1939 register at Brighton.

Is she named in any of the death notices for her siblings?
Their wills?
Did they live long lives?

4 of her siblings died after 1952, latest may have been 1974.
I don't have and am not aware of any death notices or wills.
I will see what I can find.

Sibyl & Julian are together in a 1951 Nashville city directory and traveled to the UK together in 1951, so I guess if they divorced, it was some time after that.

This mentions her visiting her cousin during her travels in 1951.  https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-tennessean/176338519/

Here's another article about her travels in 1951.  https://tennessean.newspapers.com/article/the-tennessean/176338220/

I didn't see her in the Tennessee death index up to 1965.  There is a death index that covers the next few years after that - https://cdm15138.contentdm.oclc.org/customizations/global/pages/collections/death/death.html

Julian was in the 1953 Nashville city directory, but no mention of Sibyl, so perhaps she went elsewhere then.

It appears they divorced in May 1952 in Reno, Nevada.

Thanks shellyesq and RJ137,

The article about visiting Capt. James Voss has helped me find what happen to 2 relatives.
He would be Walter James Valentine (Ballantyne ) Voss who died 10 Jun 1980 Yeovil, Somerset, England.

If a US citizen died overseas, would any US authorities be informed?

I have seen entries in the Social Security death index where people last received their benefits overseas.  I didn't see a likely match for her there though.  Those entries mostly cover people who died in the early 1960s or later, and they would have to have been eligible for benefits, so I'm not sure if Sibyl would fit into all those categories.

This blog post also mentions information from citizens who died overseas - https://narations.blogs.archives.gov/2010/07/23/family-tree-friday-death-reports-of-u-s-citizens/  I looked at the database and didn't see any likely matches for Sibyl.  I'm not sure how comprehensive that is though.

This list of correspondants is interesting.

Sybil Nichol was sending letters up to 1952, and then from late 1952 a Sybil Seim was writing to the family - mentions an "Oliver" (possible husband?), a return to England and then later, in the 1960s, living in Sydney.

Good finds, jorose & RJ!

Sibyl Gordon Seim is on a passenger list from Dover to New Orleans by way of Kingston, Jamaica in Dec. 1959.  She is listed as born 12 Mar. 1900 in Australia and an American citizen with passport #191848.

Sibyl Gordon Seim is on another passenger list arriving in New Orleans on 18 Dec. 1960, listed as a US citizen with the same passport number.

Outward UK passenger lists have her going to New Orleans in 1952 and for the above trips, from England to Sydney Australia in 1953 & 1958, and England to Cape Town, South Africa in 1957.
