Hello All,
I am trying to establish the early years of a William Gemmell, born 1847 in Renfrew. He must have moved to England by the late 1860's as he married Ellen Brown in Hull in 1868. The only pointer to his parents might be through his trade as a shipwright and then shipbuilder in the Hull area.
Thanks,
Paul

A pointer to his father should be on his marriage certificate so that is a good place to start.
It should also give his fathers occupation.

Yes, marriage certificate is your starting point, and will give father’s name and occupation.
Possible 1851 census

Baptism for this William is in Scotlands People. Mother was Margaret Rusk.

Transcription of the marriage names his father as Alexander
-
1861 census, the family is in Birkenhead, Cheshire.

There was a pub, now closed, on Anlaby Road, Hull, called the William Gemmell.
The Hull History centre has William Gemmell as owner and skipper of the "Heron" in the 1890's
