My Great Great Grandfather William John Love 1823 - was in the British Royal Artillery but I can not find his death which was prior to 1868. Where might I search (have tried the usual sites eg Ancestory etc unsure if he died in a military Conflict. He was based at the Woolwich Arsenal in London.

Have you seen this 2nd marriage in 1855? William John Love, Corporal in Royal Artillery, widower aged 32, to Ann Farquhar, 28

The signature matches his first marriage in 1847

I see that daughter Elizabeth named one of her children (Ann Farquhar Papple) after her stepmother.

Clues point to a likely death in Aberdeen in 1860.
Burial 7 April 1860, St Peter's Cemetery: William John Love

Plot purchase in June 1861 by Mrs Ann Farquhar or Love, of George Street, Aberdeen

This plot was transferred in 1881 to William Williamson. In the 1871 census a William Williamson was the occupant at 17 James Street, Aberdeen, which was the location of Elizabeth Love's wedding in 1868, at which he was a witness.

Scotlands People has the death of a William Love, aged 37, in St Nicholas RD (Aberdeen) in 1860.

I see now that William Williamson was Ann Farquhar's second husband. She married him (as Ann Love or Farquhar) in 1861 in Old Machar, Aberdeen (168/2/26).

He is recorded in the 1841 Army Worldwide Index as a gunner and driver in the 8th Company, 6th Battalion Royal Artillery, and in the 1851 WW Index in the 4th Company 9th Battalion Royal Artillery. On both occasions he was in Woolwich. Both these battalions were Royal Field Artillery.
-
He is also recorded in the 1851 civil census living at 48 Wellington Street, St Marys, Greenwich, London with his wife Charlotte and daughter Elizabeth born in Ireland 1849, but I expect you already have that information.

Thank you both you have been incredibly helpful. Particularly the connection with the name Ann Fraquar did wonder why Elizabeth' daughter was given that name also the connection with William Williamson which came up in my research. Just now trying to get definitive birth of Elizabeth (his daughter which I know was in Ireland and where she went once her parents died. have one census of her in Aberdeen with a Grandmother but cant confirm.

Although civil registration in Ireland hadn't started in the late 1840s, Army births were nonetheless forwarded to the GRO in England and so I think the registration below is a good bet for Elizabeth's birth.

Thank you all again . I have some of that information but you have all filled some gaps. They had an interesting life. Elizabeth and James then headed to India where they both died after having 8 children. Haven’t found out when and exactly why but assume to work for the RAJ.
I have had difficulty with the Loves and the documents I have state William John Love’s father was called John and mother Elizabeth but I have struggled to find definitive proof. Hence death record for William with father called William doesn’t match the birth information I have.

You mention an 1861 census on which an Elizabeth Love appears as a granddaughter. This must refer to the household of Adam Russell in Govan. Adam Russell (53) is ex-army and has a wife Elizabeth (58). There is an army marriage in Gibraltar in 1830: Adam Russell and Elizabeth Love. It all points to that latter Elizabeth Love being the mother of William John Love.
-
Thanks Shaun J I did find Adam Russell and Elizabeth but couldnt prove the Elizabeth was Elizabeth Love but with the wedding in Gibraltar that gives some proof. i have also been following William's father John who was also in the Royal Artillery and he was discharged in 1823 but then no trace but can now assume he maybe died before 1830.
Thank you for your help

There was an artillery soldier John Love who died in service in Gibraltar in 1828
