I do have the 1891, 1901, 1911 census already
Mary and Fredrick.
-
Mary and Fred had two children I know of
John Thomas Turton ☑ (I have a bunch of info on him already)
1870–1938
BIRTH 1870 • Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England
DEATH APR 1938 • Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England
and
Mary Ellen Turton
1877–1958
BIRTH 1 JUN 1877 • Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England
DEATH 24 OCT 1958 • Derby, Derbyshire, England
I am looking for
Mary Parks - Parents, siblings, 1851 census, 1861 census, death
-
Her birth certificate will confirm parents names for you but have you her marriage certificate with a fathers name and occupation?
-
Not familiar with Notts but there is a baptism 6 Nov 1842 Bleasby with parents Page & Sarah
Father is a shoemaker
-
The birth registration for John Thomas in 1869 has mothers name as Parkes
-
Closest death I can find is Mary Turton age 76 in Jun 1914 Basford
She is 75 in 1911 but her birth year does vary on census
Do you know when her husband died? Likely one in 1925 so he should be on the 1921 census as married or widowed **
** he is widowed
-
She is firm on the birthplace of Stoke Bardolph
Possible 1861?
Mary Parkes 22 transcribed as born Stoke Bardith Notts servant in Leicestershire
Info from the marriage certificate would be helpful as to her residence at time of marriage
So quite a bit for you to think about there
-
There is too wide a variance in her birthyears to be certain.
1861 1839
1871 1843
1881 1841
1891 1844
1901 1847
1911 1836
Death 1914 - 1838
-
I think the 1836 date can likely be eliminated. Her daughters husband likely filled out that census
Her birth is likely between 1841 and 1844. Although the other dates can fully be eliminated.
-
As recommended above - you need to buy the 1868 marriage cert to see if she names a father

Yes, the marriage cert is a good Idea I will be doing that eventually.
I went through all Mary Parks born 1842 plus or minus 2 years in the GRO
location wise only two people are remotely close to the location consistently stated where she was born, Stoke Bardolph, Nottinghamshire, England
-----
***PARKS, MARY Name: Mother's Maiden Surname: WILSON
GRO Reference: 1840 D Quarter in OF MANSFIELD UNION Volume 15 Page 501
9.7km away
----------
***PARKS, MARY ANN Name: Mother's Maiden Surname: FARNSWORTH
GRO Reference: 1842 D Quarter in SOUTHWELL Volume 15 Page 627
less than 15km away
---
people didn't often travel great distances back then
-
If the last name was put in as Park
then we can add this birth as well
PARK, MARY ANN
Mother's Maiden Surname: HOOD
GRO Reference: 1842 D Quarter in LOUGHBOROUGH UNION Volume 15 Page 137
-
I know the birthdate is 1838 but thought best to add in case it helps
1851 Ragdale, Melton Mowbray, Beeby Household
There's a Mary Parkes age 14 Servant born Stoke Bardolph
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tum/
1841 Stoke Bardolph, just adding a Parkes family
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01tun/
-
So that would that make her birth year 1836. That is one year before the GRO and explain why it has no matching birth Registration
I merged the two Mary Parks on family search GXNV-G3W
-
I don't know if this is helpful, but the Notts FHS CD has no baptisms for Stoke Bardulph, but there is a transcription from 1836 thus:
18 Sept 1836 Mary PARKER father James (labourer), mother Jane, abode Stoke, bapt at Gedling All Hallows
Gedling is only 2 miles from Stoke Bardulph.
I think "Parker" is a mistake either on the PR or on the transcription as here are some other baptisms at Gedling, some of which are probably the same family, note the varying surname
1826 08 20 William James PARKS Alice Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1828 12 29 Elizabeth James PARKS Alice Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1830 02 05 George James PARKS Jane Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1831 11 20 Martha James PARKS Jane Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1833 10 29 James James PARKES Jane Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1836 09 18 Mary James PARKER Jane Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1838 05 05 William James PARKES Ann Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1839 05 12 Jane James PARKS Jane Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1841 11 14 Rebecca James PARKES Rebecca Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
1845 06 08 Rebecca James PARKES Anne Labourer Stoke GEDLING All Hallows
I'm confused about how many James there may have been when you look at the mother's names for these children. The only marriage I can find at Gedling that might fit any of these is this one:
1837 09 13 James PARKES Ann LACEY GEDLING All Hallows
I can't see any marriages for a James Park% to a Jane, Alice or Rebecca!!
I see in 1841, 4 year old Mary Parkes is in Stoke Bardolph with Jane (age 40, charwoman) and 4 other children who match some of those above.
There are a large number of Parkes/Parks burials at Gedling which state that the person lived at Stoke; these include:
1853 06 08 James PARKS 64 Stoke
1890 11 21 James PARKES 76 Stoke
I'd guess one of these would be Jane's husband.
This is probably Jane's burial:
1865 04 06 Jane PARKS 75 Stoke Gedling - so yob around 1790, so I suppose the older of those two James (died 1853) is probably more likely to have been her spouse.
-
Aha! In 1851, James and Jane are together in the census and James states that he was born in Shelford. Jane was born in Lincolnshire so they may have married in her parish.
But this may be James' baptism:
1791 02 06 James (a twin) father Edwd. PARKS mother Jane SHELFORD St Peter and St Paul (James's twin was a sister called Mary, baptised at the same time)
-
So on family search you can find a Jane (Ann) Wells MQK1-HTF marriage to James Parks in
Haugham, Lincolnshire, England
11 November 1829
I haven't yet found Jane's parents or a more exact date of birth for her.
-
I wonder if James had more than one wife as well
-
Well he must have been well into his 30s when he married Jane, so he may have been married before. But I don't think there were subequent marriages, not least because Jane outlived him and it seems they stayed in Stoke for most of their lives together.
Although James was born elsewhere, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that his father or grandfather had moved from Stoke originally. There were Park/e/s there from at least the mid 1700s with other, older family members called James, and I wonder if it was a name passed down various cousin lines from a single progenitor a few generations back.
Looking at censuses, the baptisms that list Rebecca and James as parents may be errors, as Rebecca seems to have been married to a John Parkes.
