Hi,
I've posted before on here and got some good help. I posted a question for the same family on a different thread but since this person is from inverness-shire I thought it might be better to post here. I'm looking for Peter Grant who was born in Inverness shire between 1800-1810. The 1841 census has his birthdate in 1803 and in 1851, in 1806. There were about 8 people with this name born at this time in the same location. How do I determine who the correct parents are? There is no death cert as another poster on here said so it is believed he died between 1851 and 1854. His wife, Jane/Jean/Janet (her name turns up in different ways) died in 1858 as a widow.

Please post full 1851 details as there are other Peter Grant’s b Inverness with wives Jane/Janet but not b 1806 as stated in your post.

1851 - born 1803 Abernethy - not 1806
There are only 2 Peter Grant births in Abernethy on SP between 1800-1805. Both were in 1803. Presume you have already viewed them?

If he was 48 on the day of the 1851 census, he would more likely have been born in 1802 than in 1803, as the census was taken only a quarter of the way through the year.
Adding plus or minus 5 years to allow for inaccurate reporting of his age, there are 8 Peter Grants baptised in the parish of Abernethy and Kincardine between 1797 and 1808. See screenshot.
The one whose parents were James Grant and Christian McPherson is the only one who would have been exactly 48 on the day of the 1851 census.
This does not exclude the possibility that there was another Peter Grant whose baptism is not in the surviving records.

Thank you for your responses! As I go further back, I'm finding it more difficult to match people as records are missing. I'm currently looking at Peter Grant's father, James (1774? - 1846?), and there is no marriage certificate for him and Christian McPherson (1776?-1847?). The only ones that exist are between a Catherine MacPherson and James MacPherson. The one that does have a James Grant and Catherine MacPherson is too early for it to be them. I'm also having to have a guess at Jame's parents as there is not much to go on in census data since he supposedly died before the 1851 census with more detail. Most trees say Patrick Grant and Elspeth McDonald.
