Looking for Information about the marriage of
John Lewis Born Abt. 1844 Gloucestshire - Died 1901 Australia. to Unknown Female in England. The Unknown Female died (Date Unknown) and John moved to Australia where he married Martha Grundy.
John's Father is Daniel Lewis of Brenconshire and his father is Edenezer Lewis of Brenconshire. Unable to find any reference about the married or death of his first wife.
John is my GG Grandfather. I have the Australian side of the history but finding the England / Wales side has proven troubling.

Welcome to RootsChat! :D
The father's place of birth would be Breconshire, aka Brecknockshire, a county in Wales.

John moved to Australia where he married Martha Grundy.
What year was that please?
Any idea when he moved to Australia?
-
This one from the 1841 census in Gloucestershire has a Daniel but John is born c1839
Daniel Lewis 30
Eliza 25
Mary 4

What occupation did your John Lewis have please? This one is a stoker in the Royal Navy so opportunities for travel there. 1871 says he is married. 1861 says he is single.
Might not be the right man but this one married between 1861-1871.
-
Is he the John Lewis that married Martha Grundy in Sydney in 1894.
Could you please post the full details from both his marriage and death certificate.
Could you also give full details of Daniel Lewis birth date and place
-
Hi,

If so it gives his motherr's first name as Mary.

I think there has been a mix up in family trees for this John Lewis b Gloucestershire c1844. A number of trees have my family connected, but as far as my research there is no Gloucestershire connection.
Ebenezer Lewis 1782 - 1847 is my 4th great grandfather (DNA verification)
Daniel Lewis c1812 - d bef 1871 is brother to my 3rd great grandmother Mary Lewis b 1830 Ystradgynlais, Breconshire.
Daniel did have a son John bc 1842/3 Ystradgynlais, his mother from census was Elizabeth, nee Williams from marriage in 1832 and children's GRO birth reg. John still in Ystradgynlais with widowed mother, unmarried in 1871.
Interestingly I have many DNA connections for Grundy decendants through her mother...Mary Lloyd. My 2nd great grandmother was Jane, sister to Mary, daughters of Thomas. Jane was the only one that stayed in Wales when they up sticks and moved to Tasmania in 1855.

Hi Southern Cross. Welcome to RootsChat.
I have posted a lot of information above, and it may take some time for you to go through it all.
It is important to be looking at the correct family.
Hopefully it will make sense – if not, please ask. We are usually friendly. :)
I know your original question about the first wife of John Lewis has not been answered yet, but we don’t know if he married in England or Australia. No doubt, an answer will emerge.
Now you have his birth details correct your next step would be to look for him in the English census and also look for an immigration record to Australia.
I would recommend getting a copy of John's Birth certificate (digital download) for your records.
-
Children for the above William and Alice added -
Another daughter Mary Lewis born 1812
This Mary is (I think) later Maria and sometimes Hannah Maria.
She is the one married to Everard Vigis. The son in law of Alice named in the death notice. (Sometimes Everet, Everarde, etc) he died 1869
Added. Blowed if I can find the marriage. Looks as though in 1841 ‘Mary’ is ‘Ann’

I read that as :
The grandson, John Donald was the principal legatee. Or at least he receives a specific thing. (Which I cannot read) The remainder divided between John (the father) and his sisters. It was in trust to Caroline who was supposed to administer the estate on his behalf but refused to, and then she voluntarily left the jurisdiction.
Does it imply Mary Ann & Eliza are also living in Australia? It doesn’t tell us if they are married or not. Does it?

Segment from the WILL
" ….. I bequeath unto my grandson John Donald Lewis, the son of the said John Lewis, my printing establishment with all the …? (apparel) connected therewith, as purchased by one from the said John Lewis, and my land at Mooroopna for his own sole use ….."
I did see a couple of mentions in the newspaper of John Lewis “Printer”.

John Lewis sister / Daniel Lewis’ daughter Eliza in the 1881 census is still living in Wantage Berkshire with her Uncle George Lewis, a china and glass merchant. She is working in her Uncle’s shop. George died in 1889.
In 1891 Eliza is still living with her Aunt Hester, working as an earthenware dealer.
By 1911 Eliza is still single and running a China and glass shop.
In 1921 Eliza is 76 and single and a glass and china dealer.
As an interesting aside, George Lewis married Hester PERIAM in 1843 in Coaley Gloucestershire.
At this stage I assume that Hester was sister to Eliza PERIAM the wife of Daniel Lewis.
Daniel Lewis’s first daughter sister, Mrs. Hannah Maria VIGIS (formerly Mary Ann Lewis) I can last see in 1881 living in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, age 68, A ministers widow.
Now we know from the TV that Midsomer is a dangerous place to be – murders there every week! ;)
-
I thought Hannah Maria Vigis was Daniel’s sister. Bap 1812
Died 1885

The PERIAM family is an interesting lot – the father John was a musical instrument maker

Just a bit more information about the distribution of Daniel Lewis' estate.
His grandson John Donald Lewis died young in 1889, and therefore did not inherit.

Sydney Morning Herald
Thurs 31 Jan 1901
LEWIS.—The Friends of the late Mr. JOHN LEWIS, Printer and Law Stationer,
15 Imperial Arcade, Sydney, and Woolwich, are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral, which will move from 810 George-street, Sydney,
THIS (Thursday) AFTERNOON, at 2.30, for Waverley Cemetery.
If you are interested in pursuing when father and son, Daniel and John Lewis immigrated to Australia, I would suggest you look at death certificates, which would give “time spent in colony”.
This will give you a time frame to look for shipping lists. I would expect they were “un-assisted” immigrants.
Southern Cross, since you haven’t replied to your thread, we don’t know whether the numerous responses have been helpful.
Without interaction from you, I think we have reached a dead end.
