She left England oktober 1930 and was enrolled in Etterbeek (Brussels-Belgium) th 25-10-1930.

Hello Jean - Pierre

This is going to be a difficult search.

As a foreign national at that date she would not have had a vote and will not appear on the electoral rolls, which would have given her address. I have checked the available nursing registers on the Ancestry website and didn't find her. I also checked the available passenger lists on that site.

The nursing training at Beckenham hospital didn't start until 1941 according to a Google search, so perhaps she trained in London. Or did she train in child care rather than nursing?

The most well known institution training nannies was founded by Emily Ward in 1892 as the Training School for Ladies as Children’s Nurses in Norland Place, London. It soon became known as the Norland Institute, and celebrated its’ 125th anniversary in 2017.

Thank you very much for your message.
I know that this is a difficult search. I am allready searching for years. And the belgian archives from the 2 hospitals she worked for where distroyed…..
My searching for a nurse could be an error….. My sister always told me that our mother became a nurse during her stay in England. This could be : "Oh, my , our Mother, such a wonderfull women…… ;)"

Yesterday I receaved an information from Etterbeek where she was anrolled with as job in french : "Gouvernante". This could be in English "Nanny". Could this information help in this search ?
Have a good day.

Welcome to RootsChat Jean Pierre.

There is this advertisement that sounds possible - correct surname and age, location and likely occupation.

In 1921 at 1 Park rd, Beckenham is the family of Stanley GLANFIELD (47, clothing manufacturer, Director "G Glanfield and Son Ltd"). They have 3 servants  (a cook, nurse and parlourmaid). It is possible it was the same family still there in 1930.

Modified to add:
Though the property, 1 Park road, Beckenham" was listed for sale in 1929

Hello Maddy, Daisy  :o  ??? ;)
Thank you very, very much for this informations. I am going to search for that family Glanfield in Hamburg, Germany.
May be they had some body of that name in Hamburg.
Till now I could not find any traces of Johanna SAUTER in passengers lists comming in England, or in Belgium or going out From Germany, or England.
I could also adress (or try to... ??? ???.) me to the police departement in Beckenham. What do you think about that ?
Kisses

Hello Jean- Pierre

There was a requirement for aliens to register with the police between the 2 world wars and up to the early 1970's. My father was a German who had to do this, as he came here in 1950.
I think these records are now unlikely to be retained by the local police, but surviving ones covering the London area may be at the National Archives at Kew.

You can read more here about which ones are available

Hi,
I think Stanley GLANFFIELD died in 1939 in England.
The probate was granted to wife Annie.

Name Stanley GLANFIELD
Death Date 13 Feb. 1939
Death Place Middlesex, England
Probate Date 27 Mar. 1939
Probate Registry London, England

Miss SAUTER might have got a job from the advertisement she put in the paper in May 1930.
Maybe she accompanied a family to Europe to be home to enrol by October 1930.

That's great Shaun. After I saw that the property was for sale in 1929 I have been trying to find out who was there in 1930.

I did note in some news items that the Glanfield & Sons business was not doing as well as previously in 1929 and 1930.

There was a recovery after that.

But perhaps that was the reason for Stanley Glanfield moving address.

I thank you all for the different informations you gave me. For Sue :  I don't think that my mother got a job from the advertisement she put in the paper. Why I think that ? She left GB in 1930 and was anrolled in Brussels - Etterbeek the 25-10-1930 and in Gent - Belgium 12 march 1931. She could have taken the decision to leave GB after the announcment the house in Beckenham was for sale in 1929. This is just a reflexion and accepting that the Miss SAUTER in the advertissement is really my mother.
Let us, me, hope that some body put the fingers on a definive confirmation that THAT is THE Joanna Sauter I'm looking for.
I know my english could be a lot better..... So sorry, please don't worry about missspelling....

I'm sure we all hope as you do that it is the right person.
 ;D
In your memories of her, was she a talented tailor and embroiderer and was she able to speak other languages as in the self-description in the advertisement?

Hi Sue,
In my memories of her, Yes she was a talented tailor (she made all our clothes for my sister and me) embroiderer ? I guess yes, and she was able to speak German and French and later Flemish.... (1930-31). She lived in Hamburg (Germany) from +/- 1924 in an English Family (my sister's memory...) where she had to take care for the children. We don't know when she travelled to England and how ? (I believe not by Swimming ... i guess  ::) :D ) OK ..... it's  ::)
Hamburg + boat, Hamburg + train (direction France or Belgium) and boat
Have a good day.

Hi Sue and everybody,
Hi to everybody,
I come back to you….
As my mother (Johanna SAUTER borne 1907) travelled from Germany to England (1923 or later) and lived in Beckenham/Kent till 1930, I suppose that when she came in Beckenham she had to enrolled or register her by an administration. The same when she left Beckenham early 1930 going to Brussels. In Brussels she has been enrolled coming from Beckenham/Kent.
So my question is :
Is there any way to know where this registration (or outgoing registration) was done?
I'm thinking about some police or administration services. May be Beckenham, London……. or else…..
Could somebody in this forum give me an idea and or help to find out where I should address me ?
Thanks for any help or information which could help me go further.
Please excuse my english, I'm not using it frequently....
Jean-Pierre.
