Title: Vere Smith marriage to Elizabeth Jones
Post by: Elizlloyd on Thursday 03 July 25 12:03 BST (UK)
Hello

I have on my family tree a Vere Smith married Elizabeth Jones 4th March 1776 in Chepstow Parish Church I would welcome help in finding the name of this Church please as there is so many churches in the Chepstow area.

Vere Smith I think was born in 1726 as there is a Baptism 5th Oct 1726 son of Edward Smith
I am wondering if I have got confused somewhere as Vere would have been aged 56 in 1776 when he married.

Look forward to hearing from anyone

Thanks
Elizlloyd.

Thank you for getting in contact again lovely to hear from you, and hope your keeping well. I have been in contact with you previously in case you have forgotten,  a few years back and you were very helpful on finding lots of information on the Smith family, this has helped me a lot piece the Smith family tree together.

The Smith family seem to originate from Chepstow, about 17th century this is the information  I have so far, going back to Edward Smith buried 1734 St Mary Church Caldicot, Chepstow. Then I found the marriage for Vere and Elizabeth 4 March 1776 also at St Mary's Church Chepstow which is lovely to know that parish registers can be so helpful.

Vere Smith Baptism. 1726 lived at Claypits Farm, Bulwark, Chepstow being the eldest son of Edward Smith and Elizabeth Smith née Herbert when Edward passed in 1734 buried in St Mary Churchyard.

Vere owned the farm after Edward Smith and then this Vere Smith had a son also to confuse things called Vere Smith so I am wondering if  his son Vere Smith that married in 4th March 1776.

Yes I am not sure if Vere Smith baptised 5th Oct 1726 St Mary Church, Caldicot, Chepstow is the same one that is buried in 2nd Nov 1788 St Mary Church, Caldicot, Chepstow.

I would welcome help with this if possible.

Thanks
Elizlloyd.

Thank you for your reply and for your attachment that is good to know he was still at Claypits Farm in 1780 in your post and no I haven't found anything more to do with Caldicot Court, but will look into finding more information on it.

Thanks
Elizlloyd

All the best to you also :)

Thanks and yes I have seen it before but I could hardly read the first page the year 1788  coincides with when Vere Smith passed away in 1788, and the other pages were an inventory of his goods he owned and not sure what the Bond is about really. I would welcome help clarifying what the Bond is about would be good and why it was in his name.

Thanks
Elizlloyd
