Title: Diary summary 6th July 2025
Post by: louisa maud on Monday 30 June 25 07:20 BST (UK)
Morning  folks, who would think July  is here so soon.

27 degrees on the house this morning , I am off to London later on and oh boy I  reckon it will be far to hot,  but hey ho, it is what it is.

Having helped to organise  a tidy up of the churchyard it seems everyone was very pleased, must admit it does look good, we have a village fete soon so we are out to impress, we have a new fund raising leader and this fete is hoping to be big, she has put her heart and soul into it,  it will be a success.

Keep cool everyone difficult as it it this heat.

Well mustn't complain,  but we do but I do prefer it somewhat cooler, my garden could do with rain,  my annuals aren't looking so good.

Spent all day yesterday weeding, as overcast despite heat. Shattered by end of stint. A jug of Pimms did a lot to revive me!
Don't think I'll be weeding today!

Gosh LM you’re brave tripping up to London today… take plenty of water! Hope you enjoy your visit..

Currently 29C outside here … would have loved to stay in the air conditioned sports hall all day as doing Pilates was lovely until we stepped outside!

Spent last week driving from Brighton and back in a day, then down to London and back in a day, finally to Cirencester for the w/e… all lovely trips but OH does all the driving and is looking forward to a rest this wk… until Sunday when we drive to London for eldest grandsons 12th birthday!

Our London trip last week was to see our youngest grandsons play his saxophone at the Albert Hall along with 1,399 other musicians & choirs to celebrate Ealings Symphony Orchestras centenary celebration. It was a magical evening and grandson was full of it all at 9 three quarters something he’ll remember for a long time as will we all.
Try and stay cool everyone today and although it’s lovely to have a sunny warm summer this maybe a little over the top.. pity those poor souls in Europe with 44+ ..a sign of things to come.

It's 28 degrees here on the North East Coast. That's nothing to me having spent the last couple of weeks in 35 degrees in the Med.  ;D Forecast down by ten degrees tomorrow.

You've certainly clocked up some miles Caroline, you must be so proud of your grandson.

Now 32C here so staying inside watching Wimbledon…. Already two retired through injuries not the best start for the tournament!

Glad you enjoyed your time on the med.. Hope you enjoyed your time there.

We are super proud of him, he wasn’t at all  overwhelmed by the experience which is great as it means it took it all in… our daughter organised a box for us all ( other grandparents too!) and she’d told him the number so he could count along and watch for us! Lots of big waves from him when we arrived and easy to spot with his blond hair!

Actually managed to mow the big back lawn, as I had an early start outside, whilst it was cool! Quite proud of myself,, although it's nothing like as well done as my OH would manage, were he able still to do it.
Then I resumed mega-weeding, well that's what it feels like. Also changed a double bed, and put a washer-load out. Phew! I'd have a rest, if I could only remember how to do that.
Decided it is "new" cats' official birthday today - 1st July. Had them since last day of last year, and they were almost 6 months, I think, then. So prawns were on the lunchtime menu.

A dark overcast miserable day here in the North West, not cold though ,just moderate.Had some light showers but nothing much.

My few figs are darkening ,when black I shall eat them.
Woken  at five this morning by a “ domestic “
—— four squabbling magpies ,what a raucous racket!
They were pecking  at the roofing felt on my son’s utility room roof ,not sure what there was for them.

I do hope it is a brighter day tomorrow.
I think schools break up in about two weeks, then Flash Harry and family will be up here with all the clothes I left at my daughter’s so I could travel light .
Son took it down as he went by car,I can’t do that anymore ,train is more convenient—— literally! But I can’t manage the luggage , so grandson will bring it up -only clean and unworn things left.I always take far too many clothes with me and wash socks and undies each day so nothing left needing washing.
However he had to go on to Head Office so came home via Birmingham and called in on an old Uni friend as son is Godfather to friend’s daughter.

Well hope all are alright , given we know many are being stoical.
Cheerio folks ,look after yourselves.
Viktoria.

Oh, the sun is shining again today  ::) and the temperature is currently in the low 20s.  Shopping is done and put away.  Washing was done and ironed yesterday, and several large glasses of cold drinks were consumed.     I'm off to the hairdresser's later for a wash and blow dry session, as I still can't wash my hair single-handedly.  I tried watching a video posted by a one-handed girl showing how she washes her hair, but she was so quick that I found it hard to follow.

Last night we went to a stunning concert and heard an excellent choir singing Rachmaninov's atmospheric All Night Vigil (Vespers) in a local church.  The atmosphere was created by starting the concert later than usual, so that the unlit church became darker as night fell and only the area surrounding the choir was lit, mainly by candles.  The most impressive bit for me was sung by a counter-tenor, a tall, gangly young man with a mop of curly hair and a surprising voice.  Apart from his solo, he was singing with the altos for the rest of the concert and stood head and shoulders above them.  The concert was part of the Budleigh (Salterton, that is) Music Festival, an event which is very popular round here.

Enjoy the day, everyone and keep cool.

Sounds good Gillg ... the temp, the pampering and the concert  8)

Mild temps for time of year for us, anything can change and bound to, very much an indoor day yesterday with wet weather across the country, some much worse off than others as often the case.

Sad to hear another of my first cousins had died a few days back, he hadn't lived in NZ for many years and we really didn't know him as an adult we're all of a senior age of course!  A new great-great -nephew due this week and awaiting that arrival with anticipation.

Weekend upon us again already, hoping to see back of a seasonal virus before seeing grandchildren half way through holidays. They have all been sick themselves end of term including our daughter, an exhausting time for her too with shifting house ... but looking up  :)

All the best ...all  :)

I would welcome a steady 72 degrees or thereabouts ,  really can't cope with high temps  makes me lethargic.

I have been to Budleigh Salterton, if I remember it is not fat from Sidmouth, I liked that coastline very much, that was in the days when we towed our caravan, for 40 years we had caravan holidays, my husband gave up when he was 80 but I do miss it when we are out and see an outfit pass us, happy days.

Seems unbelievable  that the schools finish soon, time is passing,

Viktoria, I expect you are looking forward to seeing your  little ones and how much they have grown.

Keep cool everyone and take care

What a difference in the weather, all we need now is rain

I have been to the local hospice  anniversary  fete today,  what a disappointment,  went to the sister one a few weeks ago and was disappointed in that as well,  a real shame so as a consequence  I only donated, I am sure they have missed a chance there to make a lot more money.

Out to a BBQ   at my daughters this evening, looks as if I need a coat and a brolly but I don't mind, this weather is more like I like, not the heat we have had recently.

Just returned from my nephew's wedding in Richmond (the one in London, for all you Yorkshire folks), which was both moving and exciting.  There were several different nationalities there, as the bride and groom met while working in the Middle East and the bride is of North African Arab descent, but who was born in France.  She wanted to wear the antique lace veil, which several generations of my family have worn, and somehow managed to incorporate it with a modern and very beautiful dress.

Our nearly 4 hour journey was very easy, as we were taken by our daughter and husband in their new and spacious car.  The hotel was good and the wedding and reception restaurant were close together and not too far from the hotel, though we did take a taxi - not an Uber, which quoted a ridiculous price for the short journey.  On the advice of the hotel receptionist we used another similar company which charged us half the Uber price and was very efficient.

Back home I took advantage of one hour's free electricity (thanks, Octopus!) to put on the washing machine, and everything is now blowing nicely on the line.  Today is fine and windy, though not as hot as it has been recently.  For the wedding day we had warm sunshine, so all the pretty dresses looked lovely (and the men looked smart, too  ;).

Nice to read if people getting out and about to nice places .
Rainy day here after a mild sunny start.

At hospital yesterday and saw The Consultant after an ECG, she showed me the printout and pointed out all the irregular beats, some very fast and others slow,so a pacemaker to be fitted, I can’t remember just when  she said  that would be but I will get a letter ,hope it will not clash with grand daughter’s
wedding in August —- 23rd I think.

Had one of my very rare attacks of vertigo this morning ,my the room was spinning so quickly I nearly fell off!
Took an hour of lying totally still ,eyes closed ,before it subsided.
Not had that for a good few years .
No more trouble through the day .

Have been amazed at the reactions to the death of the young footballer and his brother,a great tragedy but the outbursts of grief have been huge .
Gosh ,who remembers Munich and Manchester United ?
Much grief but more quietly expressed, but that was then —-

Garden in full bloom ,roses and Astilbes out and quite a good few flowers, carnations and pinks , geraniums ,and big poppies too —- I grew those from seed ,from a neighbours’s plants, she gave me some seed heads.

I am wondering how I will manage as our contributor Gillig, who has just had a pacemaker has mentioned ,left arm cannot be raised for quite some time .
Hanging washing,washing hair etc ???

Plus and minus points discussed and I have said I probably will go for it .

Hope all are O.K.
 Thanks for the news .
Look after yourselves .
Viktoria.

Temperature expected to rise to 17c today.
Not warm, but not raining.

It's a croquet day today!
I am officiating at an annual match between Ramsey and Douglas - most players were in the Maritime Industry.
I am the Referee, Umpire, Coach and Handicapper!
Not allowed to play "because I am too good"!
Just because I have played in 5 World Championships?!

Tomorrow is our National Day - Tynwald Day. So a public holiday.
Hoping for warmer weather!

Well that is something to be proud of- why do we never see Croquet on T.V.?
I am fed up with tennis and the grunts, that never used to happen ,
I can remember Jarislav Drobney ,about 1954,in the finals, against Ken Rosewall or I think or Lew Hoad , I must look it up—- Drobney seemed like an elderly person (30ish) to we young sixth form teenagers so we were for him. We thought him so old he would never get another chance .
In fact he had a long and illustrious career after Wimbledon.
No grunts then!
Why do all main channels televise the same sports ?
Not everyone is interested in sport at all ,I do like rugby and Owen Farrell is back — all those sideways glances at the goalposts!
Cricket I can watch too ,wish I had seen Fred Truman  in person or even T,V.
there is  just one shot in a Dad’s Army episode - must search through old test match footage.

A very cool morning here, fairly bright but really chilly.

Tasmanian Chicken casserole for  tea, chicken cooked  in pineapple juice
and Soy sauce with Spring onions ,,black pepper,  add pineapple ( tinned) at the end .
Serve with rice and watercress .
You may need to thicken sauce with cornflour ,it should coat the ingredients.
About an hour in the oven(moderate)  if chicken cubed but if joints used
About another half hour .
I tend to overcook pork and chicken , my preference.

Well must get on ,not fed the fish yet, they will be knocking at the kitchen door!
No vertigo this morning but got up v e r y slowly.

Well we did live abroad for almost 12 years Jan 1965 - 1976 July.
I never had daytime T,V,well with three children ,one born there so eyes in the back of my head in the daytime so no   daytime TV, and whilst we could get one British channel in the evening I don’t remember cricket highlights .
My husband would have watched for sure.
We got Dad’s Army , the Belgian people loved that especially the titles when the little British arrows were poking across The Channel at the Big German ones —-
Not sure of Truman’s dates —-
Quite a character our Fred!—— well Yorkshire’s really but England’s too.

I hope you don't have to wait too long for your pacemaker.  I think it was probably about 18 months from the first meeting with the cardiologist to the actual fitting of mine.  So far so good, but I shall have to go back in 3 weeks time for them to check that all is working well.

Yes, doing things single-handedly is difficult.  My daughter has been washing my hair for me and I had a salon wash and blow dry last week before going to my nephew's wedding, which looked very smart, I'm told.  Showering is tricky and getting things from a high shelf, too.  I do have to remind myself not to raise the arm above shoulder height.  Even dressing can be problematic, and I am constantly searching my wardrobe for front-fastening blouses and dresses, but the six weeks will soon pass, I tell myself, and then I can put things on over my head again.

Take it easy, Viktoria. It's quite frightening to have these dizzy and fainting spells.

GillG  I sympathise with your problem having to do everything single handed lay, it took me ages to recover from my last bad fall, being right handed it was particularly difficult having to do everything with my left hand. At least I can now wash my hair in the shower and I can reach up to the middle shelf in the kitchen cupboards now but not to lift anything heavier than a tea plate in or out..

Viktoria I'm sure you do too much, you are always so busy you should learn to take things a little easier. When you get up from sitting or a reclined position you should stand still then stamp your feet a couple of times to steady your blood pressure.

I am fed up with all the sports on television, there has been so much of it knocking other things off their normal schedule.  They should have dedicated channels for sports, there are enough channels showing old repeats not just once but the same things several times.  I appreciate that a lot of people watch sports but there are many like me who have no interest in it. My late  husband was into athletics I was  happy to go and cheer him on or watch that on television but I drew the line at boxing. I said I would only marry him if he gave up boxing, I felt rather mean but was but was not prepared to be always worrying what injuries he would come home with. Fortunately he understood and quit immediately.

We did take our boys to watch the England team training when Bobby Moore was captain, they were at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin preparing for a match against West Germany 1976, we were living in Berlin at the time.

Down in Suffolk so a train journey but son will drive down and my luggage will go with him.
I can’t do the long miles between “ comfort “ stops which are few and far between and pretty grotty .East  of the Pennines.

Well tea nearly ready so will bang on the wall to tell son to come from next door .

Tasmanian chicken casserole with pineapple ,soy sauce .lemon juice ,spring onions .Served with rice and  sweetcorn, and mixed leaf salad  .

Many thanks ,I am pleased  that I am not so bad that a pacemaker would not be of benefit .
Keep positive —-
I do get times when I can sit quietly ,do one room a day unless a hospital
appointment ,then I have to sit for ages  either at home  or hospital, waiting for transport as my son can’t say in advance that he will not be able to take me and certainly can’t wait for the hours well past my appointment time ,lHe is tied to the computers and is in contact with others internationally ,that is how his work is done,so not free.
I have discussed with the Heart Failure Nurse about this but her advice was to stick with the transport , my health warrants this facility and the more people who use it the better chance it will continue for people who really are in the last months of life, with no family and unable to afford taxies
It is - or was £70 from Ramsbottom to Rochdale—— one way so £140 for a return journey .
Many can’t afford that.
Getting all services at your nearest hospital is a thing of the past ,but the journeys to a hospital which specialises inevitably means quite a long journey
and high bus  or taxi fares ,

However I get good treatment and am very grateful .

Going dark already , but light so early in the mornings..

Just had a call from grand daughter who is getting married in August ,I would have done the wedding cake but it would be a traditional three tier rich fruit cake ,she naturally wants a more modern one which will be very high . Transporting that?——-so she is doing her own.

Baby Lily is coming on wonderfully , lovely videos.

Well , Flash Harry was chosen to do the invitations ,well the drawings of
a bride and groom and the church, then they have been printed .
I think that is lovely .
He is a nice little boy-  well nine now.

No appointments really this month ,so can get on with a few things.
I do pace myself ,do a job then sit down with a cup of tea and watch T,V.or do a crossword for an hour or two .
It is a very easy house to run , the main problem is space, I was unrealistic when I brought too much stuff but have sent to charity a great number of things .
It looked so much bigger totally empty and all painted white with the same carpet throughout .

Well son will be back in soon for milky coffee and chocolate  biscuits then bed and a good book.

Night night ,
Look after yourselves .
Viktoria.

I think we're all pleased you are still making some pace and here with us Viktoria, and hopefully not too long to dwell on when appointment might be. Steady on with the vertigo, quite unsettling and many suffer long term or have to wait out an episode. I just have the temporal positional type which thankfully mostly fleeting episodes and without nausea and can have it for a while and then disappears until the next time.

Nice to be looking forward to a family wedding, pleased to hear your family one went well too Gillg.

A lovely day and another week of school holidsys, have been expecting daughter grandchildren arriving this morning but they will be here soon after lunch.

Have a good new week all ... hope the croquet went well KG

Post by: Viktoria on Monday 07 July 25 09:34 BST (UK)
Thanks mare ,yes my vertigo is not with nausea ,it must be a couple of years since I last had an episode so no great problem ,I think mine is something to do with my neck ,a nerve perhaps ,no lasting side effects but I must remember to get up very slowly when getting out of bed.

A very chilly morning here.
Stripped my bed and  washer going .
Son next door is having new fencing today , the concrete fence posts need straightening - leaning over - not sure how big a job that will be and how it will affect my border but needs to be done .

I have put the heating back on ,it really is cold and son at the computers not moving about will feel it .

Have ordered an outfit for the wedding ,had made my mind up what I would wear but thought I would see what was available online .
The prices are ridiculously cheap so I am expecting a bundle of rags!
A self coloured dress but with a sort of spray of printed flowers going up the front to one side and a short fitted three quarter sleeved edge to edge self coloured jacket .
We will see, free returns so nothing lost .
The reception is in an orchard where my grand daughter lives so high heels will be difficult but fortunately I have a new pair of lower wedge heeled champagne  dull metallic shoes with bag to match  ,never used so they will do the job .

I can’t believe this weather , really cold and dismal.

Well Tesco order today so fridge to clean before it arrives at ten this evening .
Cheerio and thanks for  kind wishes and I am thinking if those with health problems and worries .

I don't suffer vertigo but a friend of mine much older than me does, she is just careful how she gets up in  the morning and tries not to turn her head to quickly, difficult when you have always done things the same way and much quicker.

Viktoria,  I am sure you will look the bees knees in whatever  you wear, high heels, sadly can't manage those now, wish I could.

Well we have had a lot of rain overnight, water butt full up, happy bunny, it is looking brighter now.

Off to the new week now.

I was rather glad not to be wearing high heels at my nephew's wedding, as we had to clamber down (and of course later up again) a quite lengthy steep path with occasional steps into the valley where the reception was held from the lovely Richmond terraces above.  On the return journey I had a helping hand from my husband and my son-in-law, as it was dark by then and we were relying on phone torches.  My bargain sandal type shoes from a charity shop (£2.20 in a half-price sale and clearly barely worn and of good quality!) were the only ones I had been able to find in navy leather.  I had spent quite some time looking for them and could only find very strappy sandals and trainers in regular shoe shops.  And they were comfortable, too!  "Sandal type shoes" means that they were strappy at the front but enclosed at the back.  Younger guests were teetering about in perilously high strappy footwear.

Viktoria
I hope you don't have to wait too long for your pacemaker.  As TY has said, it's quite a simple operation and it's very reassuring to know that it's doing its job afterwards.

Well I must be honest - my shors and matching bag are from our Age UK charity shop.
They are a very good make , Van Dal , never worn ,the soles still smooth and shiny .My size so a real bargain —- well since I have never worn them perhaps not ,but we buy shoes new and they might well have been tried on by a few customers .

I also got s pair of black leather and patent slip ons, same make and again not worn .

Well a bright sunny but windy day so lots of washing done and most ironed and airing on the clothes maiden.

Daughter phones this evening ,grand daughter yesterday .
She is such a practical girl  ,has it all organised and was back at work to help her Mum  within days of Lily being born ,
It was a tricky time and as the accountant was really needed so everyone mucked in and Lily was nursed by salesmen and mechanics alike ,and customers .Big hairy bikers whilst waiting for a service or repair .

Well look after yourselves folks , thanks for  your good wishes and I hope you all are well, knowing many have health problems so I hope you are at least comfortable .
