I have an old iron sign which reads "Scindia House".
It was found on a beach in Folkestone Warren where I understand debris from World War 2 bomb damage was bulldozed and tipped.
A bit of a long shot but I wondered if anyone has heard of Scindia House as I think it must be a house name.
-
Not in Kent but there was a house called 'Scindia' in Orchid Crescent, Billericay at the beginning of WW2

An identical query was posted in 2015, on Folkestone Memories.
No answers! :D

In 1921
Scindia, North Road, Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, Wales
Many many mentions in newspapers of a commercial building in New Delhi named Scindia House.
-
I don't know if it is an alternative to Scinde House.
There are some of that name, nearest to Kent being in Clapham. Seems to relate to the military, including a Scinde Medal and Scinde Horse regiment.
There are some people born in Scinde, India, on the Kent censuses, including four in Folkestone or Dover.

Very many thanks for the replies.
That was my post on Folkestone Memories (what an interesting site),seeing the sign again prompted me to tap the expertise always found on Rootschat.
Will now investigate the replies!

Here is a map showing where bombs fell on Folkestone during WWII
https://battle-of-britain-diary.org.uk/folkestone-bomb-map/
Looking at Kelly's street directory for 1909 very few houses have names but you could trawl through it. No results for Scindia are showing in the search though.

rosie99--I cannot any records of that address,is it in any census?
mckha489--Now this is interesting, the 1921 census for this address shows a Richard Jones age 62 born Carnarvon, master mariner ret'd.Why would he name his house Scindia if he wasn't employed by the Scindia Steam Navigation Co Ltd ?
Trying to find master mariner records.
I think Scindia House New Delhi {Government Offices) would have had a much grander sign!
Have yet to investigate further replies.

Thanks Bearkat, very interesting,I looked through the Folkestone Directories but found nothing, no Richard or Hannah Mary Jones.
Thanks also DCB for the Scinde suggestion.
Rosie99,I still cannot find any info about that address, could the Jones's have lived there?

It’s in the 1939 register. But there is no one listed at that address

Trying to find master mariner records.
A mention of Captain Richard JONES -
"JONES, Nov. 30, at 19. North-road, Carnarvon, aged 29, Marjorie Grant, the dearly-beloved wife of Captain Richard Jones (late Astracana), and was interred yesterday at Llanbeblig."
Saturday, Dec. 4, 1897
Publication: Liverpool Mercury
A small obituary here, though again only mentions Richard JONES as Captain of the Astracana.
Saturday, Dec. 4, 1897
Publication: North Wales Chronicle
He also saved a man from drowning, however no mention of previous ships:

mckha489 -I cannot find the 1939 record on Ancestry. Is the house listed as being "Scindia" ?
Many thanks Maddys52, the Astracana was a large 4 masted sailing ship nearly twice the tonnage of the Cutty Sark.

Scindia, Orchid Crescent, Pitsea was a bungalow.

See note at the bottom of the page - It looks like this house was demolished before 1949.

There's this one in Cranbrook Street, Cardiff in 1939 (Frederick Hoddinott, pork butcher):

There's a 1950 passenger list for the MV Caledonia (Anchor Line), from India, which includes a William W Brown who gives his UK address as "Scindia House, London".

I still think the scenario suggesting that rubble from bombed houses being dumped at Folkestone Warren is the most likely.
Looking at some old maps of Folkestone
https://webapps.kent.gov.uk/KCC.HeritageMaps.Web.Sites.Public/Default.aspx
Very few houses have names but in reality many would have, in addition to their house number.
I think every house in my road has a name. They have a pretty sign outside but the name is rarely used as part of the address.
-
I think ShaunJ that is Scandia which apparently is an ancient and poetic name for Scandinavia.
You are right bearkat it seems logical that the sign is probably local.
I am wondering now if most,if not all,of these Scindias relate to the Scindias of Gwalior State India. They have ruled the State, and still do.A lot on the web (eg "Jai Vilas Palace).
