Hi I’m wondering who to contact to retrieve old burial records for Glasgow? Specifically the Southern Necropolis in Gorbals. Thanks!

How old?

1850’s - 1900 I have quite a few. I know one was buried there for sure it’s listed on their death cert, the others died in Gorbals so I’m assuming they were buried there as well. Would like to look up records online if possible

Might not be relevant, but was looking for some pauper burials in the 1840s. Glasgow archives replies that they had some early records but they were not indexed. So you'd need to actually go in and look through them. A bit trick from Australia, so haven't done that yet.
Don't know exactly what 'early' meant, but certainly little online for the 1840s.
Might be worth contacting them directly with a general question??
Cheers

Southern Necropolis on FamilySearch (free, need to be logged in)
https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/catalog/1322281
You can browse the films via the camera icon, or search them via the full text icon.
Earliest register from 1840-1843
How well does the full text facility read the entries? Judge for yourself here

It may not be a straightforward search!

Thank you! I was able to find the record for one of the others on the death certificate (there are 3 as you probably know). However I couldn’t find my ancestor. Upon closer inspection there is a distinction - this person has “Southern Necropolis”, mine specifically has “Gorbals Cemetery”. I thought these were the same thing. Do you know where to access the Gorbals Cemetery records specifically? For context this record is from April of 1859.

The Old Rose Garden Lair Records are held by Glasgow City Archives at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow
(around 1882 Glasgow Council, in widening Rutherglen Road gained control of the Burial ground and many of the deceased were re interred in the Southern Necropolis)

Very interesting read thank you! It seems all (or an attempt at most) of the bodies were reinterred at the southern necropolis. Perhaps unmarked for many. I guess even if I can’t find a record, they’re probably at the southern necropolis now.
