Title: Adoption and Original birth certificate
Post by: aidansrest on Saturday 28 June 25 14:24 BST (UK)
Hi

Firstly, the gentleman I am referring to is now deceased.

I know where he was born his exact date of birth, and his given surname at birth. He knew nothing of his mother or father.

He was born in 1926, but by 1939 was living with his adoptive parents. When he married he named his adoptive father as his 'father'.

Can a relative obtain his original birth certificate? I have looked on FreeBMD but cannot trace his birth registration.
Do we just need proof of his death and proof of relationship to buy a copy?
Does anyone know where to apply?

Thanks in advance!

Anyone can apply for any certificate, no need to prove anything.

But you will need to find it in the index - how sure are you about the birth name/year/place ?

You can apply to GRO, but you need the Index Reference (Year, Quarter, Registration District, Volume and Page). And name! There are usually 6 Birth Registrations per page.

If you are unable to complete the mandatory fields, you will not be able to apply online and you will need to follow the telephone ordering process which incurs an additional fee of £4.50 Please contact them on +44(0) 300 123 1837 for further information.

Also, you "might" only find his mother`s name.

Good luck!
