Title: Mary Jane Mulley b. 1874 North Shields
Post by: mulberry-rose on Friday 27 June 25 20:10 BST (UK)
Hi,

I’m currently stuck trying to find the birth of Mary Jane Mulley born approximately 1874 at North Shields. She went on to live with George Theodorakis, a sailor (never married).

There is an 1881 census in North Shields which has her has the daughter of Thomas Mulley, b. 1834 at Essex and Mary Jane b. 1838 in Northumberland, with a brother Magnus b. 1861.

I believe she is the daughter of Thomas Mulley and Mary Jane Willan who married in 1871 at South Shields. There is a birth in 1876 Tynemouth of a Thomas Mulley MN Willan who died as an infant, but none for Mary Jane.

Mary Jane Willan was previously married to William Wylie in 1854 at Bishopwearmouth and had William Hamilton (1856), Peter (1859-1860), Magnus Cleet (1861). However, she also has an illegitimate daughter Mary Jane Brown Wylie in 1864 who I don’t know what happened too (or if this could possibly be my Mary Jane, just birth a decade off?)

Any help is very much appreciated  :)

This doesn't answer your question but I'm just adding that according to the South Shields website Thomas and Mary married at St Hilda on 21 June 1871 - just on the off chance you may not already have the date and venue.

The code is CF and the marriage index showing on this site indicates St Hilda.

There is a Mary Jane Malley birth registered in Dec quarter in Newcastle in 1871.  Slightly different spelling and mmn is Bremman.

Could there be a Bremman connection in family background of her Mother?
(My own Grandmother gave her step father's surname as her maiden name at birth reg of her first child but for all the rest she used her birth Father's surname as her maiden name.)

Hi RTL,

Good catch on the birth, don’t know if Bremman is a connection to Mary Jane Willen but certainly could be!  :)

Thanks for the marriage info, it looks like Mary Jane Willen’s father is named Richard Willen. When she married Thomas, she’s listed as widowed. Will have to do some digging on that side.

There is certainly a lot of name switching in this family.  ::)

Thomas’ birth confirms Mary Jane Willen’s marriages

Thomas Mulley born 13 July 1876 at Dock Lane, North Shields son of Thomas Mulley (merchant seamen) and Mary Jane (late Wiley, formerly Willan)

I had seen a newspaper clipping in 1939 of Mary Jane Mulley’s obituary but hadn’t had the chance to look, that is definitely her as residence matches.

The two infants Florrie and George I think may be the children of George Theodorakis and Mary J Mulley, as since they never married the children switched between the names. How sad they died in the workhouse  :'(. There was a birth registration for ‘Florie Theodorakis’ in June Qtr 1908 at Tynemouth which approx matches the death for that Florence.

I wonder if George & Mary J had briefly split (hence workhouse & surname Mulley) as their next child was not born until four years later.

Richard was listed as Wylie on microfilm, I remember seeing that. Managed to locate a baptism of a Mary Jane Willan in 1830, Tynemouth, daughter of Richard a turner and Mary of Stephenson Street.

Hi Mulberry Rose,
I have updated the memorials of Mary Jane Mulley/Theodorakis  and her son Andrew with notices and also a newspaper photo for the latter.

By the way, do you think this Richard may be Mary Jane's maternal Grandfather?  I have added him on Find a Grave at Preston Cemetery, North Shields.
