Hi
Not sure whether anyone would be able to assist with this query - driving me nuts!!
So, I have a transcription from a marriage that took place in St Pauls, Hendon on the 18th December 1876 between Charlotte Willis and Cornelius Marquez.
Both were living in 32 Woodbine Street, both of 'full age' Charlotte's father was George Willis and Cornelius' father was Henry (Henri) Marquez.
Cornelius was a seaman.
I don't know who the witnesses were, or what was given as given as the occupation of Henry Marquez.
Rumour has it that Cornelius came from Spain - but, alternatively, he could have easily have come from Mexico or Argentina.
He and Charlotte had three surviving daughters, Georgina, born on the 12th December 1878, Elizabeth Hannah, born on the 18th August 1881, and Mary Jane, born on the 14th June 1883.
Cornelius was away at sea in 1881, Charlotte and elder daughter, Georgina, was still in 32 Woodbine Street - Charlotte confirmed that she was a seaman's wife.
1891- still listed as 'married' with three daughters in 49 Tyne Street, Sunderland
1901 - widowed in 49 Back Wear Street
1911 - widowed in 23 Woodbine Street
remarried on the 2nd April 1913 to William Tomrop - died 14th January 1918.
But what of Cornelius?? Who was he?? Would he have a Merchant Seaman record?
Any ideas on how we can find out?
Sue

Doesn't answer your question but I don't know if you have seen the marriage licence / bond on Familysearch

Was Charlotte the woman named Marquez living in Tyne Street who gave evidence against Thomas Anderson at the Borough Police Court in 1893?

She was, yes

Would certainly make things a lot easier ::)
This is their marriage announcement, Sunderland Daily Echo on 23 December
-
Thankyou...just frustrating that he never appears with her on a census....or any census for that matter!
-
Unfortunately I think it is quite a common occurrence in port areas, with them all being away at sea :-\
Charlotte was also witness to a bigamous marriage in 1877. (Sunderland Daily Echo 24 Jan 1878)
-
Yes.. saw that too...May have been a relative...Charlotte's maiden name was Willis...as was the bigmists!

I think that article is referring to Willis as Charlotte’s maiden name, not Sarah.
“She [Charlotte] signed her maiden name (Willis) as a witness”
Sarah Jane Nesbitt married James Lucas Mar Qtr 1876 Sunderland
Then
Sarah Jane Nesbitt married Peter Conley Sep Qtr 1877 Sunderland
