The above married Edward Charles Hammond in 1940 in Victoria but other than that fact I know nothing more about her? Edward died 14 May 1964 Ipswich, Queensland.

Ancestry show her on Kooyong ER's to 1930

The Argus 18 April 1950 ( from Trove)

Not quite correct. A story appeared on 9 March 1950 but an apology was published on the 18 Apr.1950. Will not re-post articles here but searching for "Sylvia Hammond" (including the quotes) brings up both articles.

If Edward Hammond only died 1964 & Sylvia married Hickey in 1959 they presumably divorced
-
Ethel Jane COE was Sylvia's stepmother, not her mother.

Very interesting research All, are there any newspaper notices about the possible divorce and birth of the son?
Cr

Sylvia's maiden name was almost certainly Andrewartha, a fairly common Cornish surname.

A search at the below link to divorces in Victoria will answer most of your questions about her parents and their divorce.
Search
John Hopetoun Andrawartha EDIT Search John Hopetown Andrawartha. (it is actually Hopetoun, but wrong on index search)

Sad story.

Thank you sparrett, the only divorce I found was between Charles and his former wife Mary or Myra Florence Johnson in 1940.

Click the link I have given.
See Melbourne divorce records (1861-1942)
See green box
See enter name Husband/or wife.
Put in John Hopetown Andrawartha

Thank you Sue (sparrett) what a long winded application but at least we know that Veronica was born about 1912 in Richmond, Victoria.

There are a number of articles about the divorce and various proceedings before and after - search on trove
https://trove.nla.gov.au
limit the search to Victoria, searching for "andrawartha" etc brings up a few items.
eg https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/199446207 (April 1913)
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/154904911 (December 1915)

Well, yes. Seems to be between September and December 1912. But that is only a deduction based on the comings and goings and other events detailed in the petition file.
And John seems to accept the girl is his without question-at least as far as the contents of this document are concerned.

The will/probate for Sylvia Veronica Hickey also known as Vera Hickson (Public Record Office) d Feb 1978. Not available online.
This might just add to the confusion!
